Café Inquiry (Online) – Humans or Robots in Space?

September 11, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

For the past few decades there has been an ongoing debate as to whether humans or robots are better for space exploration. We have gained a great deal of scientific knowledge from robotic probes sent to the near and far reaches of the solar system and beyond. On the other hand, the Apollo missions, the space shuttle program and the ISS have captured our imaginations while also advancing our knowledge of the space within our planetary system;  and there are serious efforts underway to return to the moon on a more permanent basis and eventually to land a crewed mission on Mars! At the next Café Inquiry we will look at the pros and cons of both these approaches, and examine whether we should be spending money and resources on space exploration in the first place. This “Scientific American” article from 2008 gives a good summary of the arguments on both sides.  This “Forbes” article comments on a book that advocates ending human space exploration, at least for now. This OpEd from the University of Central Florida comments on the essential role of robots in space exploration. This 7-minute YouTube video features a brief panel discussion of the subject. This under 3-minute video has a pair of astronomers debating the subject. Finally, the editor of “Universe Today” makes the argument that both methods of exploration are necessary in this sub-4 minute video.  Join us!

Café Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic, followed by casual discussion.

This event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated, but not expected.

Attendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism, agnosticism, humanism, secularism, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities, such as religion, philosophy, social issues, politics, evolution, morality, ethics, and psychology.

Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday.

Michigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event.
