Confidentiality Statement
It is the policy of Michigan Humanists that board members, staff, and volunteers of Michigan Humanists will not disclose confidential information belonging to, or obtained through their affiliation with, Michigan Humanists to any person, including their relatives, friends, and business and professional associates, unless Michigan Humanists has authorized disclosure. This policy is not intended to prevent disclosure where disclosure is required by law.
Confidentiality is the preservation of privileged information. Board members, staff, and other volunteers are cautioned to demonstrate professionalism, good judgment, and care at all times in handling any information related to Michigan Humanists to avoid unauthorized or improper disclosures of confidential information.
Confidential information includes but is not limited to membership records, contact lists, donation records and other personal financial information, contracts, organizational manuals passwords, and financial records, either in paper or electronic form.
While board members, staff and volunteers are expected and encouraged to discuss the organization with one another and targeted members of the public, they shall not engage in any communication that would not be supported by board policy, procedures, or decisions. If you are concerned about the appropriateness of giving individuals certain information, you are not required to answer. Please refer the issue to a Michigan Humanists staff person/Board member.
At the end of the term of a board member, staff, or volunteer, or upon his/her retirement, resignation or removal from the Board or committee, he/she shall return, at Michigan Humanists’ request, all documents, papers, and other materials, regardless of medium, which may contain or be derived from confidential information, in his/her possession. It is expected that board members, staff and volunteers will not use member lists, donor or contact information, or other confidential information acquired by virtue of being a Board member, a staff member, or a volunteer, even after they complete their service with Michigan Humanists.
