Suggested topics for this month are 1) the Venezuelan situation\, 2) TV\, books\, movies or other entertainment you were excited about in 2025\, and 3) whatever else comes up. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) - We Need an AI Treaty!
DESCRIPTION:Research and development in artificial intelligence is advancing at a dizzying pace – but this is not\nnecessarily a good thing. At the next Café Inquiry Jason Swanepoel\, the group leader of the Grand\nRapids chapter of PAUSEAI\, will make the case for an international AI Treaty to temporarily pause AI\ntraining and development. Jason will talk about his background in the field\, and about why AI\ndevelopment is a threat and ways people can take action. For background\, here are links to the PauseAI website and to their info page.  This should be a fascinating discussion of a very current issue – a great\nway to kick off another year of Café Inquiry! Hope to see you there! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. (There may be scaffolding in place due to construction\, but you can walk under it). Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor\, and follow the Michigan Humanist signs. Or ask directions from someone. The choir room is located on the left at the south end of the west hallway. \nParking information – Street parking\, if you can find it\, is free on Sunday. The nearby GRCC Parking structure is free until 3 PM on Sunday\, although this is not advertised. You will need to take a ticket to enter the structure but the exit gate will be open if you leave before 3 PM. Parking is also available free for up to 2 hours in the Public Library lot for patrons. You will need to have your ticket validated in the library. DESCRIPTION:Living Without Religion is a support group for those who are recovering or have recovered from religion. These people know your struggles\, and can offer support. We will share experiences\, resources\, and solidarity to help deal with all the problems related to leaving religion and moving onward in your life. \nIf you have left your religion\, are thinking of leaving\, or would like to support others in similar situations — this is the space for you. You are not alone in your search for a secular lifestyle. Questions and stories will be shared\, friends will be made\, and discussions will be had. \nLiving Without Religion is always free and open to anyone who meets the above criteria. \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - Stoicism for Humanists
DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nStoicism\, an ancient philosophy\, has been enjoying a recent resurgence. In 2019\, Meditations\, written by\nthe famous Stoic Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius\, sold more than 100\,000 copies. It has been suggested\nthat Humanism has roots in Stoic philosophy. At the next online Café Inquiry\, we will take a break from\ncurrent events. Instead\, we’ll examine the philosophy of Stoicism and look at the ancient roots of\nmodern Humanist thought. Massimo Pigliucci\, a professor of philosophy at the City College of New York and longstanding humanist\, describes his reasons for adopting a philosophy of Secular Stoicism in this article from New Humanist. In this article\, Jules Evans\, a philosopher and author of the book Breakfast with Seneca\, discusses the reasons for the recent increased interest in Stoic philosophy. There is a link in the article to an interesting 15 minute video which goes into a little more depth. Finally\, Canadian philosopher Trudy Govier discusses her exploration into and thoughts about Stoic philosophy.
