SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - The True Nativity Story? There Isn't One.
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nThis is the time of year that Nativity scenes and pageants abound. But is there any actual history behind these stories? Join us ONLINE on the eve of the Solstice (as marked on the old Roman calendar) as we take a look at how the mutually contradictory Christian Bible versions of the birth of Jesus likely came to be\, and why probably neither of them is true. We’ll also take a look at some of the other solstice-related holidays that have been celebrated over the years. It’s just a 90-minute break from all those family holiday activities! The only suggested background readings are the first 2 chapters of Matthew and the first 39 verses of Luke Chapter 2 that contain the accounts of Jesus’ birth. Here are links to Matthew and to Luke in the event you don’t have access to a Bible. Hope to see you online on the 24th! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion.
