SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - The Dirty (Un)Truth About Electric Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nThis week\, Dennis Gaymer leads a discussion of electric vehicle technology. His synopsis (edited and abridged): \nClearing Away Some FUD about EVs – \nI get it. Change is hard. And scary! There’s no shortage of purveyors of fear\, uncertainty\, and doubt (FUD) about electric (EV) over internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles\, EVs being part of the Commie\, Socialist Green New Deal designed to take away our freedoms. First of all\, there are the fires. At least\, that seems to be all the buzz. But if you read this article from Electrek the statistics don’t seem to bear this out.  In fact\, AXA\, a multinational insurance company\, recently held a major\, live press event to show how dangerous the battery pack in a Tesla really is. Except it turned out that all was not exactly what AXA was trying to portray. Then there are the concerns about limited range and time spent charging\, debunked here; concerns about freezing to death in a snowstorm\, debunked here; and severe problems driving in hot weather\, debunked here. (Videos probably contain ads). The hot weather debunking video contains this link to Transport Evolved’s FUDbusting video series. The claim that sourcing the ingredients for batteries is more polluting than driving an ICE vehicle is addressed here by Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained. And if you haven’t already OD’d on videos\, this last one addresses a click-baity video regarding towing deficiencies of the electric Ford F150 reported on by Alex Jones\, Sean Hannity and Breitbart. \nThere are so many myths about driving EVs that it’s hard to keep up with all of the FUD. EVs aren’t perfect. I don’t believe anyone in the EV industry claims that they are. But mainstream EVs have progressed considerably since the introduction of the Nissan Leaf in 2010. It’s time to call out the naysayers and let powered vehicle transportation evolve away from fossil fuels. Join us as we discuss the exciting future of electric vehicles! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. Please speak to the event host or contact info@michiganhumanists.org if you feel these expectations are being violated.

SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Muskegon and Online) - Let’s Fix the World!
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online and in person. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting). \nIn Person Meeting Address – 3268 Millard Ave\, Muskegon\, MI. Outdoors\, weather permitting. \nWe might as well face it. There is a LOT wrong with our world today – racism\, religious nationalism\, climate change\, rising fascism (again with this nonsense?)\, and the threat of nuclear conflict rising out of the invasion of Ukraine. And that’s just the short list. As humanists\, how do we react to these things? Ignore them and hope for the best? Obsessively doomscroll? Wonder about how the blazes we got into this mess? Drink and heavily self-medicate? Or do we join groups\, share with others\, and maybe try to think of possible solutions – credible or not? Join us for a brainstorming session where we’ll throw out some ideas to fix one or more of the current problems. We want this to be about your ideas\, so join us\, live or online! \nCafé Inquiry (Muskegon) meets each month on the second Thursday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Truth? How Dare You!
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nJoin us at the next Café Inquiry\, where Steve Andersen will lead a discussion of truth in its various manifestations. Steve’s synopsis\, slightly edited: \nI certainly appreciate truth. I think I may have a grasp on it. But what truth?  I would argue that truth is not a monolith\, but that truth is subject to nuance\, culture\, and perspective. I’m not intentionally blurring the lines between truth and not truth\, but rather trying to edify what truth is and how it manifests itself in human terms.  So…let us share the different truth claims that we may subscribe to. Is your truth invested in ontological truth? Empirical truth? Metaphysical truth? Metaphorical truth? Cultural truth? Personal truth? The list goes on. Once you have defined which truth you are espousing we can have a conversation. Conscientious truth building is a component of arriving at some overarching truth. It’s not failsafe and is fraught with ambiguity but tends to allow for wiggle room\, discourse and antipathy. In short\, before one argues or subscribes to a claim one should first argue what truth claim they are asserting. Before you assert conclusions about truth…please define what truth you are subscribing to either quantify or qualify your belief based on that truth. \nFor your edification prior to the meeting\, 3 videos: \nHere is a 4-minute video arguing for an objective reality and against relativism. In this 18-minute video a philosophy professor discusses 3 theories regarding the nature of truth. Finally\, this 27-minute video features a discussion of truth vs. reality. Join us for what should be a deep and meaningful – but fun – discussion! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Should Student Loan Debt Be Forgiven?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nStudent loan debt\, which has grown dramatically over the last 10 years\, is an economically\ndebilitating problem for many Americans. President Biden’s recent executive order and plan for\nforgiving a significant portion of this debt has\, unsurprisingly\, generated quite a bit of controversy.\nAt the next Cafe Inquiry we will look at the plan and examine it’s expected costs and benefits. Here is a White House Briefing about the Student Loan Relief Plan. This brief article from the New York Times morning newsletter discusses the plan. If you are blocked from the NYT site\, you can read the PDF version. This article from ProCon.org discusses some of the arguments for and against the loan forgiveness program. This site shows what college education costs in other countries. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Humans or Robots in Space?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nFor the past few decades there has been an ongoing debate as to whether humans or robots are better for space exploration. We have gained a great deal of scientific knowledge from robotic probes sent to the near and far reaches of the solar system and beyond. On the other hand\, the Apollo missions\, the space shuttle program and the ISS have captured our imaginations while also advancing our knowledge of the space within our planetary system;  and there are serious efforts underway to return to the moon on a more permanent basis and eventually to land a crewed mission on Mars! At the next Café Inquiry we will look at the pros and cons of both these approaches\, and examine whether we should be spending money and resources on space exploration in the first place. This “Scientific American” article from 2008 gives a good summary of the arguments on both sides.  This “Forbes” article comments on a book that advocates ending human space exploration\, at least for now. This OpEd from the University of Central Florida comments on the essential role of robots in space exploration. This 7-minute YouTube video features a brief panel discussion of the subject. This under 3-minute video has a pair of astronomers debating the subject. Finally\, the editor of “Universe Today” makes the argument that both methods of exploration are necessary in this sub-4 minute video.  Join us! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Muskegon and Online) - Why Is Christianity So Successful?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online and in person. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting). \nIn Person Meeting Address – 3268 Millard Ave\, Muskegon\, MI. Outdoors\, weather permitting. \nWhether a historical Jesus existed or not – and historians are split on this question – the religion founded in his name almost 2000 years ago has become the largest in the world\, with an estimated 2.38 billion adherents as of 2020. [Also note that Islam\, a younger religion by several hundred years\, has just under 2 billion followers. Who knows what the breakdown will be in another 600 years or so?] What was it that led to this widespread propagation? Was it something about the teachings of Christianity\, the historical context in which it was developed\, or a fortuitous (for Christianity) combination of factors? Join us as we discuss the spread of Christianity and the possible reasons behind it! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - How We Entertain Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nAll of us\, or at least most of us I hope\, have leisure activities that we enjoy. This week we take a break from some of the weightier topics we’ve been exploring (gun safety\, abortion history\, ballot initiatives\, wrongful criminal convictions) to talk about what we enjoy doing in our leisure time. What books\, articles\, periodicals or what have you are we reading? What television shows\, movies\, or video content are we watching? What music\, discussions\, or podcasts are we listening to? What online or in person games are we playing? In what other ways do we fill our leisure time – assuming we have some? This is our chance to share our favorite activities and hear what others are enjoying. It will be a good way to find out something about the people we see in the little boxes on our screens twice a month\, and maybe we’ll be turned on to some new TV series\, movies\, books\, games\, or other enjoyable pastime. This will be our last Café Inquiry of the summer (yes\, I know the second Sunday in September is still officially summer\, but it’s after Labor Day so doesn’t really count as actual summer)\, so let’s have fun with this one before we return to more serious\, but hopefully still fascinating\, topics! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nHomelessness has been a problem in the United States for many years. Solutions have been\nelusive and in fact the number of homeless people has been skyrocketing recently.\nAt the next Cafe Inquiry\, we will discuss the causes and effects of homelessness in the US and\nthroughout the world\, and will look at policies and programs that can aggravate and/or\nameliorate the problem.\nIf you would like to explore the topic before the discussion\, here is a smorgasbord of suggestions: \nOn the Ezra Klein Show podcast from July 19 2022\, titled “Why is Housing so Expensive –\nParticularly in Blue States”\, Ezra Klein interviews Jenny Schuetz\, the author of the book Fixer-\nUpper: How to Repair America’s Broken Housing Systems”. Here is a link to the podcast and a\ntranscript on the NYT site. If you don’t subscribe to the New York Times and you have used up your monthly quota of free articles\, you can access the podcast here.  Here is a brief article from the NYT morning newsletter.  A PDF is provided here if you can’t access the article directly. Here is a short article from “The Week” discussing homelessness. This 2016 article from the Atlantic examines approaches that have been tried or suggested. This website looks at the total homeless population by state\, and this one looks at the rate of homelessness by state. To look at the scope of homelessness around the world\, you can look at this Wikipedia page\, “List of countries by Homeless Population”. Here is a brief report from I-SPHERE (Institute for Social Policy Housing\, Equalities Research)\,“Ending Street Homelessness Globally”. And finally\, here is one story about significant improvements in Finland in the battle against homelessness. Please join us for what we hope is a productive and educational discussion of this growing problem. \n  \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Muskegon and Online) - What Does It Mean to Live a Good Life?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online and in person. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting). \nIn Person Meeting Address – 3268 Millard Ave\, Muskegon\, MI. Outdoors\, weather permitting. \nWe often hear people talk about “living a good life”.  But what constitutes a “good life”? Different people have different definitions concerning how to live a good life\, often depending on their particular worldview. A person with a religious viewpoint might define a good life much differently than would someone with a secular outlook. How do you look at what characterizes a good life? Are there certain necessary ingredients that make up a good life\, or can there be as many definitions of a good life as there are individuals? Join us as we dive into this topic\, and any others that come up in the course of the discussion! \nBut we might have buried the lede\, because this month we’re meeting IN PERSON!!! for the first time since…well\, you know. As we have had over the past 2+ years a number of attendees from a bit farther away than is reasonable to drive (such as Utah)\, we’re going to also provide a Zoom link so those people can still attend. We’re not sure how well (or poorly) this will work\, but we’re going to try. We’ll be outside\, weather permitting. The address for the in person meeting is noted above. \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
