DESCRIPTION:Unruly Brewing Company – 360 W. Western Ave.\, Muskegon – NOTE NEW TIME – 6PM-8PM. \nLast year saw a number of high profile science news stories – from the James Webb Space Telescope to the first Artemis launch. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Anesthesia:What Is It Really?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nMost of us have probably had anesthesia at some point in our lives.  But do we actually know how it works? We say that we were asleep during our operations\, yet anesthesia is nothing like sleep! Anesthesiologists are expert at keeping us safely unconscious but also don’t really know how anesthesia works. Some recent research has provided some important insights about the answer to this question. At the next Café Inquiry\, we will talk about anesthesia – what we know\, what we don’t know\, and what goes on while we are “asleep”\, presented by retired anesthesiologist! Here are some links to check out if you’re interested in exploring this topic beforehand: \nThis 11- minute YouTube video talks about how anesthesia works\, why it is not the same as sleep and also describes some scary aspects of anesthesia. This brief article discusses the difference between sleep and anesthesia. This article from Science Alert gives an overview and describes some recent research findings. And finally\, this article from Wired describes some exciting new discoveries about what goes on in the brain under anesthesia. Join us to learn about anesthesia from an actual subject-matter expert! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Atheism in Mental Health Counseling
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nPost Event Addition – Here is a link to a study of atheism and psychology provided by Shane – for those of you who might be interested. \nAtheists\, agnostics\, and non-religious or non-spiritual individuals aren’t irrational in suspecting that counselors may hold implicit bias toward a Christian\, Eurocentric worldview. When non-believers seek mental health counseling\, they navigate the options and wonder if their worldview will be accepted and validated. Or will the counselor believe that non-believers suffer negative consequences without religious-spiritual belief?\nIn 2009 the American Counseling Association (ACA) updated competency guidelines for Addressing Spiritual and Religious Issues in Counseling (ASERVIC). The good news is that agnosticism and atheism appear in the competency guidelines. The bad news is that there is scant academic literature on agnosticism and atheism\, whereas the literature on religion and spirituality is robust and ever-growing. Ostensibly\, academic research favors the religious and virtually ignores the significant demographic of non-believers.\nIn this discussion\, led by Shane VanOosterhout\, we will take a deeper look at agnosticism and atheism in the counseling profession––what does the available research say about us? What experiences have you had\, if any\, when receiving professional counseling? And what are the best ways to navigate finding a counselor in our dominant Christian culture? SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - What Is a Humanist\, Anyway?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nMany of us here at Café Inquiry describe ourselves as Humanists – practitioners of Humanism. Café Inquiry is an event under the umbrella of Michigan Humanists. But what\, exactly\, do we mean by Humanism? If you describe yourself as a Humanist\, what defines that term for you? Join us as we look at the history of Humanism and the different forms of modern Humanism. This text from a talk given under the auspices of the American Humanist Association gives a good overview of the different types of Humanism\, with a look at the similarities and differences between Religious Humanism and Secular Humanism. Here is a Statement of Principles by the late Paul Kurtz of the Council for Secular Humanism. Do you agree with all\, or most of them? What’s your definition of Humanism? Here is a link to a brief description of Evolutionary Humanism provided by the Giordano Bruno Foundation. If you want to learn more there is a video accompanying the description. If you’re interested\, here are links to Humanist Manifesto I\, from 1933\, Humanist Manifesto II from 1973\, and Humanist Manifesto III from 2003. Between II and III Paul Kurtz produced “A Secular Humanist Declaration”\, in 1980. We hope to see you Thanksgiving Weekend for the discussion! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - The Stars – Our Destination?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nWill interstellar travel by humans ever happen? In movies\, on TV\, and in books people are flitting willy-nilly between star systems with seeming ease. But stars are really\, really far away. Incomprehensibly far for brains evolved to deal with Earth distances. The nearest star to our sun – Proxima Centauri – is about 4.24 light years away. The probe Voyager 1\, launched just over 45 years ago in September of 1977 and booking along at a speed of over 38\,000 mph\, is just short of 22 light HOURS away from Earth as I type this. Were it pointed in the right direction\, it would reach Proxima in roughly 76\,000 years. So obviously we’re not there yet – or even close.  For background\, this 7-minute lighthearted video from Universe Today looks at some of the challenges of interstellar travel. This video\, also from Universe Today\, discusses travel at a constant 1g of acceleration and the vast distances that could be covered in a lifetime – with a slight catch. Just for fun\, here’s a space travel calculator to help you estimate travel time and fuel requirements on your journey to the stars. Finally\, this Universe Today article takes a look at the concept of a generation ship. Join us at the next Café Inquiry as we look at the feasibility of interstellar travel in terms of the technology that would be required\, the obstacles and dangers that would need to be overcome\, and the likelihood that we will ever colonize distant planets around other stars and how it might be done. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Muskegon) - Let's Brainstorm Fixing the World! (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:  \nUnruly Brewing Co. – 360 W. Western Ave.\, Muskegon \nLast month we started fixing the world\, but got sidetracked a bit – focusing not enough on the what to do and too much on how to implement the what to do. So we continue this month! There are plenty of problems with today’s world – racism\, religious nationalism\, climate change\, rising fascism (will it NEVER go away???! It seems to come back more often than Dracula!) and the threat of nuclear war. We want to have a brainstorming session to throw out ideas for fixing some or all of these problems. No suggestion will be rejected out of hand. We just want to get some ideas on the table. And… we’re meeting live at an actual venue! So join us at Unruly Brewing Co. in Muskegon at 7 PM! Advance scouting reveals a venue that is spacious and not crowded\, and food and beverages are available for purchase! No Zoom link this month as we’re uncertain of the WiFi situation\, though this may change going forward. Hope to see you there! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - The Dirty (Un)Truth About Electric Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nThis week\, Dennis Gaymer leads a discussion of electric vehicle technology. His synopsis (edited and abridged): \nClearing Away Some FUD about EVs – \nI get it. Change is hard. And scary! There’s no shortage of purveyors of fear\, uncertainty\, and doubt (FUD) about electric (EV) over internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles\, EVs being part of the Commie\, Socialist Green New Deal designed to take away our freedoms. First of all\, there are the fires. At least\, that seems to be all the buzz. But if you read this article from Electrek the statistics don’t seem to bear this out.  In fact\, AXA\, a multinational insurance company\, recently held a major\, live press event to show how dangerous the battery pack in a Tesla really is. Except it turned out that all was not exactly what AXA was trying to portray. Then there are the concerns about limited range and time spent charging\, debunked here; concerns about freezing to death in a snowstorm\, debunked here; and severe problems driving in hot weather\, debunked here. (Videos probably contain ads). The hot weather debunking video contains this link to Transport Evolved’s FUDbusting video series. The claim that sourcing the ingredients for batteries is more polluting than driving an ICE vehicle is addressed here by Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained. And if you haven’t already OD’d on videos\, this last one addresses a click-baity video regarding towing deficiencies of the electric Ford F150 reported on by Alex Jones\, Sean Hannity and Breitbart. \nThere are so many myths about driving EVs that it’s hard to keep up with all of the FUD. EVs aren’t perfect. I don’t believe anyone in the EV industry claims that they are. But mainstream EVs have progressed considerably since the introduction of the Nissan Leaf in 2010. It’s time to call out the naysayers and let powered vehicle transportation evolve away from fossil fuels. Join us as we discuss the exciting future of electric vehicles! Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Muskegon and Online) - Let’s Fix the World!
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online and in person. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting). \nIn Person Meeting Address – 3268 Millard Ave\, Muskegon\, MI. Outdoors\, weather permitting. \nWe might as well face it. There is a LOT wrong with our world today – racism\, religious nationalism\, climate change\, rising fascism (again with this nonsense?)\, and the threat of nuclear conflict rising out of the invasion of Ukraine. And that’s just the short list. As humanists\, how do we react to these things? Ignore them and hope for the best? Obsessively doomscroll? Wonder about how the blazes we got into this mess? Drink and heavily self-medicate? Or do we join groups\, share with others\, and maybe try to think of possible solutions – credible or not? Join us for a brainstorming session where we’ll throw out some ideas to fix one or more of the current problems. We want this to be about your ideas\, so join us\, live or online! \nCafé Inquiry (Muskegon) meets each month on the second Thursday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Truth? How Dare You!
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nJoin us at the next Café Inquiry\, where Steve Andersen will lead a discussion of truth in its various manifestations. Steve’s synopsis\, slightly edited: \nI certainly appreciate truth. I think I may have a grasp on it. But what truth?  I would argue that truth is not a monolith\, but that truth is subject to nuance\, culture\, and perspective. I’m not intentionally blurring the lines between truth and not truth\, but rather trying to edify what truth is and how it manifests itself in human terms.  So…let us share the different truth claims that we may subscribe to. Is your truth invested in ontological truth? Empirical truth? Metaphysical truth? Metaphorical truth? Cultural truth? Personal truth? The list goes on. Once you have defined which truth you are espousing we can have a conversation. Conscientious truth building is a component of arriving at some overarching truth. It’s not failsafe and is fraught with ambiguity but tends to allow for wiggle room\, discourse and antipathy. In short\, before one argues or subscribes to a claim one should first argue what truth claim they are asserting. Before you assert conclusions about truth…please define what truth you are subscribing to either quantify or qualify your belief based on that truth. \nFor your edification prior to the meeting\, 3 videos: \nHere is a 4-minute video arguing for an objective reality and against relativism. In this 18-minute video a philosophy professor discusses 3 theories regarding the nature of truth. Finally\, this 27-minute video features a discussion of truth vs. reality. Join us for what should be a deep and meaningful – but fun – discussion! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Should Student Loan Debt Be Forgiven?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nStudent loan debt\, which has grown dramatically over the last 10 years\, is an economically\ndebilitating problem for many Americans. President Biden’s recent executive order and plan for\nforgiving a significant portion of this debt has\, unsurprisingly\, generated quite a bit of controversy.\nAt the next Cafe Inquiry we will look at the plan and examine it’s expected costs and benefits. Here is a White House Briefing about the Student Loan Relief Plan. This brief article from the New York Times morning newsletter discusses the plan. If you are blocked from the NYT site\, you can read the PDF version. This article from ProCon.org discusses some of the arguments for and against the loan forgiveness program. This site shows what college education costs in other countries. \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
