SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Moral Luck
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nAdam is driving home in a hurry. He comes to an intersection just as the light turns red and runs the light. He is pulled over and given a ticket for a moving violation with a $100 fine.  Amy is also driving home in a hurry. She comes to an intersection just as the light turns red and runs the light. As she crosses the intersection a woman steps into the crosswalk\, is struck by Amy’s car and is killed. Amy is arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter\, tried and sentenced to prison. \nThe above is an example of something called resultant moral luck – the same actions leading to different outcomes based on circumstances beyond the control of those performing those actions. Resultant moral luck is one of 4 types of moral luck identified by Thomas Nagel\, the others being circumstantial\, constitutive and causal. Join us as we discuss the moral and ethical implications of the various types of moral luck and the ways our intuition as to how much moral blame or praise should be assigned often comes into conflict with the principle that blame or praise should be based only on circumstances under one’s control (control principle).  Here are some links to material relevant to the topic. This 6-minute video gives a brief\, understandable summary of moral luck\, as does this short essay. This slightly longer essay (about an 8 minute read) looks at the topic in a bit more depth\, and has some imbedded video links that help illustrate the points being made.  This should provide a lot of thought-provoking conversation! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. Please speak to the event host or contact info@michiganhumanists.org if you feel these expectations are being violated.

SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Are Op-Ed Writers Given a Truthfulness Pass?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nFAIR has recently criticized Op-Ed writer Leana S. Wen for presenting statements made by unreliable sources as facts.  In the field of journalism news reporters are held to a very high standard of truthfulness\, and fact checking is an essential part of reporting. But what about Op-Ed writers?  Should they be held to the same standard\, or are they excused\, because they are expressing their opinion? Do Op-Ed writers have an obligation to correct misinformation provided by their sources? \nIt is accepted that Op-Eds do not reflect the opinions of the publication that prints them.  But does the publication have an obligation to assure that information presented in the Op-Ed is accurate? We will discuss these issues at the next Café Inquiry. \nIf you would like to see the FAIR critique\, follow this link. Here is a link to the original Op Ed\, or you can look at this PDF if you don’t have WaPo access. As background\, here is a description for aspiring Op Ed writers from the Washington Post. And finally\, an Op Ed column advocating moving beyond objectivity in reporting in order to increase the truthfulness in news. The PDF version is here. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Muskegon - Transcendence and the Search for Meaning
DESCRIPTION:  \nBurl and Sprig – 333 W. Western Ave\, Muskegon \nMost of us have had what can be loosely defined as a transcendent experience – looking at a gorgeous sunset a beautiful work of art or the vast night sky\, listening to a beautiful piece of music\, or falling in love. What causes these feelings? Is it just the interaction of the atoms that make up our bodies? Or is there another level beyond the physical? What does science tell us about this? How do we find meaning in our existence if we are basically just an organized bundle of physical processes? \nJoin us February 9 at 6 PM as we discuss these and whatever other questions that may arise! Here are a couple of links if you’d like to explore these issues ahead of time. The first is to the PBS series\, “Searching: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science”. The second is to an episode and transcript of Sean Carroll’s “Mindscape” podcast in which he discusses some of these issues with Alan Lightman\, the host of the PBS series in the first link. \nCafé Inquiry (Muskegon) meets each month on the second Thursday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Forensic Pseudoscience
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nSolving crimes using forensic evidence is widely accepted\, both in real life and in books\, movies and television shows. But are these forensic techniques really able to provide irrefutable evidence of someone’s guilt? Are they grounded in actual science? In many or even most cases the answer to the previous questions is a resounding “no”! Join us for the next Café Inquiry as we look at various forensic techniques and what the scientific evidence says about them\, and the potential and actual harm that results from relying too heavily on these methods. For those who are interested in exploring this subject ahead of the meeting\, links to some background materials follow. This 15-minute episode of Brian Dunning’s Skeptoid podcast looks at the problems associated with various forensic techniques. The transcript is included with the link. John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight takes a jaundiced  look at forensic science in this 19-minute segment.  This shortish article from The Boston Review looks at the crisis in forensic science with examples of some of the harm that has resulted. Finally\, if you want a really in-depth look at the problem and some of the obstacles to reform\, this lengthy article from The Intercept is for you! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Anesthesia:What Is It Really?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nMost of us have probably had anesthesia at some point in our lives.  But do we actually know how it works? We say that we were asleep during our operations\, yet anesthesia is nothing like sleep! Anesthesiologists are expert at keeping us safely unconscious but also don’t really know how anesthesia works. Some recent research has provided some important insights about the answer to this question. At the next Café Inquiry\, we will talk about anesthesia – what we know\, what we don’t know\, and what goes on while we are “asleep”\, presented by retired anesthesiologist! Here are some links to check out if you’re interested in exploring this topic beforehand: \nThis 11- minute YouTube video talks about how anesthesia works\, why it is not the same as sleep and also describes some scary aspects of anesthesia. This brief article discusses the difference between sleep and anesthesia. This article from Science Alert gives an overview and describes some recent research findings. And finally\, this article from Wired describes some exciting new discoveries about what goes on in the brain under anesthesia. Join us to learn about anesthesia from an actual subject-matter expert! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Atheism in Mental Health Counseling
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nPost Event Addition – Here is a link to a study of atheism and psychology provided by Shane – for those of you who might be interested. \nAtheists\, agnostics\, and non-religious or non-spiritual individuals aren’t irrational in suspecting that counselors may hold implicit bias toward a Christian\, Eurocentric worldview. When non-believers seek mental health counseling\, they navigate the options and wonder if their worldview will be accepted and validated. Or will the counselor believe that non-believers suffer negative consequences without religious-spiritual belief?\nIn 2009 the American Counseling Association (ACA) updated competency guidelines for Addressing Spiritual and Religious Issues in Counseling (ASERVIC). The good news is that agnosticism and atheism appear in the competency guidelines. The bad news is that there is scant academic literature on agnosticism and atheism\, whereas the literature on religion and spirituality is robust and ever-growing. Ostensibly\, academic research favors the religious and virtually ignores the significant demographic of non-believers.\nIn this discussion\, led by Shane VanOosterhout\, we will take a deeper look at agnosticism and atheism in the counseling profession––what does the available research say about us? What experiences have you had\, if any\, when receiving professional counseling? And what are the best ways to navigate finding a counselor in our dominant Christian culture?
