SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Humanity's Biggest Problem Is...Humanity?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nA recent article from Forbes reported on organized efforts to thwart renewable energy projects in Michigan and Ohio among other states. That triggered a thought process leading to wondering why it is\, exactly\, that we as a species can’t get it together enough to mitigate solvable crises such as global climate change. At the next Café Inquiry we’ll use climate change and other issues to examine why humanity is so resistant to taking actions that are obviously necessary for the long-term well being of humankind and the planet. Here is a link to the Forbes article that inspired this topic. A PDF of the Forbes article is here if you have trouble accessing the link. This Reuters article demonstrates that this is not a phenomenon peculiar to the United States. Nor is insufficient action limited to democratic societies as demonstrated in this assessment from Climate Action Tracker. Join us for what we think will be a free-wheeling and wide-ranging discussion! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - The Teenage Mental Health Crisis
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nThe recently released CDC survey on teen mental health reported disturbing increases in mental health problems among teens\, especially anxiety\, depression\, and suicidal thoughts. This report has generated much reporting and commentary. What are the causes of this mental health crisis? What can be done about it? There is a plethora articles to look at. Here are some suggestions if you’d like to delve into the topic before our Café Inquiry meeting on Sunday. This PDF from “The Week” provides a very brief overview with some other suggested reading. This article from the NYT Morning Newsletter examines some of the hypotheses about the causes of the mental health crisis. Here is a PDF of the article. This is an opinion piece about the crisis discussing the relative influence of politics and social media. The PDF is here. This article from the NYT focuses on teen girls. Here is the PDF. This (lengthy) article from the NYT goes into some depth\, and follows the stories of some individual teens that struggled with severe depression. It also includes a video link. Here is a PDF of the article. This is a link to the report from the CDC. It is lengthy\, but very thorough and worth looking through. Be sure to join us Sunday\, and don’t forget to set your clocks ahead Saturday night for Daylight Saving Time! \nNote – we’re still looking for a potential venue in the Grand Rapids area to start once per month in person meetings. Our previous leads all came up empty. Let us know if you have any ideas. Email James Hong by noon on Sunday with names of all attendees jh@jimhong.com \nThe program this month will be a presentation on the high-tech world of AI (Artificial Intelligence).  The exponential advancement of Artificial Intelligence has recently gotten to a point where it can outperform humans in several highly competitive job markets\, including the media. \nCompanies such as OpenAI and Google are developing the most advanced AI algorithms (or systems) that are starting to understand the world like the way we experience it.  These model algorithms are all good at certain tasks\, but now they’re trying to combine them in ways to create a working “Artificial General Intelligence” for our future. \nWe will highlight some of the mind-blowing capabilities of AI to date and explain the possible impact this can have on our society for better or for worse. \nNotable individuals such as the Tesla and SpaceX leader and innovator Elon Musk\, and the late legendary physicist Stephen Hawkins believe that AI could be very dangerous. \nElon Musk had compared AI to the danger posed by the North Korean dictator\, and Stephen Hawkins had said that the development of full Artificial Intelligence could spell the end of the human race. \nWe will show why these concerns demand immediate actions by the hi-tech community and governmental agencies to develop safety measures and necessary regulations. \nIn the prelude to the main program will be time for announcements\, introduction of new members\, and an opportunity for attendees to share their thoughts on any subject – such as latest political news headlines\, or recommendation on a book\, a movie\, a restaurant\, etc. \nDinner and Socializing – 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM.\nProgram – 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. \nBuffet – $11.99 plus tax (Updated to original price.)\nComplimentary hot tea\nCoffee\, soft drinks or ice tea – $2.00 extra\nAn automatic 20% will be added to the bill for gratuity and our use of the facility\nCash preferred to avoid a 3.5% credit card processing fee

SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Moral Luck
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nAdam is driving home in a hurry. He comes to an intersection just as the light turns red and runs the light. He is pulled over and given a ticket for a moving violation with a $100 fine.  Amy is also driving home in a hurry. She comes to an intersection just as the light turns red and runs the light. As she crosses the intersection a woman steps into the crosswalk\, is struck by Amy’s car and is killed. Amy is arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter\, tried and sentenced to prison. \nThe above is an example of something called resultant moral luck – the same actions leading to different outcomes based on circumstances beyond the control of those performing those actions. Resultant moral luck is one of 4 types of moral luck identified by Thomas Nagel\, the others being circumstantial\, constitutive and causal. Join us as we discuss the moral and ethical implications of the various types of moral luck and the ways our intuition as to how much moral blame or praise should be assigned often comes into conflict with the principle that blame or praise should be based only on circumstances under one’s control (control principle).  Here are some links to material relevant to the topic. This 6-minute video gives a brief\, understandable summary of moral luck\, as does this short essay. This slightly longer essay (about an 8 minute read) looks at the topic in a bit more depth\, and has some imbedded video links that help illustrate the points being made.  This should provide a lot of thought-provoking conversation! Please speak to the event host or contact info@michiganhumanists.org if you feel these expectations are being violated.

SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Are Op-Ed Writers Given a Truthfulness Pass?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nFAIR has recently criticized Op-Ed writer Leana S. Wen for presenting statements made by unreliable sources as facts.  In the field of journalism news reporters are held to a very high standard of truthfulness\, and fact checking is an essential part of reporting. But what about Op-Ed writers?  Should they be held to the same standard\, or are they excused\, because they are expressing their opinion? Do Op-Ed writers have an obligation to correct misinformation provided by their sources? \nIt is accepted that Op-Eds do not reflect the opinions of the publication that prints them.  But does the publication have an obligation to assure that information presented in the Op-Ed is accurate? We will discuss these issues at the next Café Inquiry. \nIf you would like to see the FAIR critique\, follow this link. Here is a link to the original Op Ed\, or you can look at this PDF if you don’t have WaPo access. As background\, here is a description for aspiring Op Ed writers from the Washington Post. And finally\, an Op Ed column advocating moving beyond objectivity in reporting in order to increase the truthfulness in news. The PDF version is here. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Muskegon - Transcendence and the Search for Meaning
DESCRIPTION:  \nBurl and Sprig – 333 W. Western Ave\, Muskegon \nMost of us have had what can be loosely defined as a transcendent experience – looking at a gorgeous sunset a beautiful work of art or the vast night sky\, listening to a beautiful piece of music\, or falling in love. What causes these feelings? Is it just the interaction of the atoms that make up our bodies? Or is there another level beyond the physical? What does science tell us about this? How do we find meaning in our existence if we are basically just an organized bundle of physical processes? \nJoin us February 9 at 6 PM as we discuss these and whatever other questions that may arise! Here are a couple of links if you’d like to explore these issues ahead of time. The first is to the PBS series\, “Searching: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science”. The second is to an episode and transcript of Sean Carroll’s “Mindscape” podcast in which he discusses some of these issues with Alan Lightman\, the host of the PBS series in the first link. \nCafé Inquiry (Muskegon) meets each month on the second Thursday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Forensic Pseudoscience
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nSolving crimes using forensic evidence is widely accepted\, both in real life and in books\, movies and television shows. But are these forensic techniques really able to provide irrefutable evidence of someone’s guilt? Are they grounded in actual science? In many or even most cases the answer to the previous questions is a resounding “no”! Join us for the next Café Inquiry as we look at various forensic techniques and what the scientific evidence says about them\, and the potential and actual harm that results from relying too heavily on these methods. For those who are interested in exploring this subject ahead of the meeting\, links to some background materials follow. This 15-minute episode of Brian Dunning’s Skeptoid podcast looks at the problems associated with various forensic techniques. The transcript is included with the link. John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight takes a jaundiced  look at forensic science in this 19-minute segment.  This shortish article from The Boston Review looks at the crisis in forensic science with examples of some of the harm that has resulted. Finally\, if you want a really in-depth look at the problem and some of the obstacles to reform\, this lengthy article from The Intercept is for you!
