SUMMARY:Skeptics in the Pub (Muskegon)
DESCRIPTION:Cajun Cuisine by Us – 333 W Western Ave Suite B\, Muskegon\n\nWe’re trying something different! Café Inquiry Muskegon is now Skeptics in the Pub (Muskegon). We will meet at various pubs\, bars\, etc. Join us this month\, at Cajun Cuisine by Us and enjoy the fellowship and free-flowing conversation. This restaurant is currently waiting for its liquor license after a change in ownership\, but if they don’t have it by our meeting date they have plenty of non-alcoholic “mocktails” available\, as well as some excellent food! Look for the Michigan Humanist table signs. And don’t worry if you don’t drink. Consumption of alcohol is not expected or required. \nSkeptics in the Pub\, “Critical Thinking with a Pint\,” is an opportunity for non-theists to converse in a casual\, fun atmosphere. Learn more about the international Skeptics in the Pub movement at skepticsinthepub.org. (We don’t invite speakers\, but rather follow our conversations wherever they take us. For a more structured discussion\, look for Café Inquiry events on our calendar.)Don’t drink? That’s okay! Many famous skeptics were teetotalers\, and there is no problem with that. Drinking skeptically means drinking responsibly. Science teaches us what alcohol does to the human body. You will find the group at a table with little Michigan Humanists table signs. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nSkeptics in the Pub(Muskegon) meets each month on the second Thursday. \n\n  \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. Please speak to the event host or contact info@michiganhumanists.org if you feel these expectations are being violated.

SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Are U.S. Budget Deficits a Problem?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nEvery time a budget cycle comes around there is much hand-wringing\, wailing and gnashing of teeth over the U.S. government’s profligate ways and the growing national debt we will be dumping on our descendants\, dooming them to lives of darkness and misery. (Never mind that many of these same people seem perfectly content to inflict the very real ravages of climate change on those same descendants – but I digress). While many economists see continued budget deficits and our increasing national debt as an existential threat\, many others see it as no big deal. Join us ONLINE for the next Café Inquiry as we take a deeper look at this issue\, and at why government debt is different from household debt.  This Op-Ed from the Brookings Institute discusses why our current budget deficit is not really a problem. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget goes into great detail about why deficits are bad. To contrast\, Modern Monetary Theory\, described in this Investopedia article \,holds that the availability of real resources should be the only limit on government’s spending ability. Hope to see your virtual selves there! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids - Fad Diets\, Diet Myths\, and Science
DESCRIPTION:Ketogenic Diet! Low Fat Diet! Low Carb Diet! Paleo Diet! Atkins Diet! Intermittent Fasting! These are just a few of the almost too numerous to count weight-loss strategies being promoted today.  They all promise you’ll lose weight and be healthier if you follow their advice\, much of which is mutually contradictory. We’ll look at what the science actually says at the next IN PERSON Café Inquiry. Background materials for your perusal include this Newsweek article that provides a good overall summary\, and this PDF of a Washington Post column that clarifies the role of calories. I’m adding this link late\, but follow it if you want to know how to get rich and famous by creating your own fad diet. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Grammar: Relevant or Means of Oppression?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nDoes bad grammar make you cringe?  Ain’t it like the worst thing ever? Many of us would say yes to the first question\, while cringing at the second.  Yet the question is actually quite controversial.  People ranging from a Banksy-like mystery man who corrects grammar and spelling on stores’ signs\, to linguistics professors who celebrate the natural evolution of language\, have argued for and against the importance of observing and maintaining “proper” grammar. Here is some background reading. This article focuses on the practical advantages of mastering grammar. This scholarly article from The Pit Journal points out some of the pros and cons of paying attention to grammar. Here is a pro con opinion debate from the NYT in 2012 (mentioned in a previous linked article). The following articles are critical of the emphasis placed on grammar: This article from Time.com offers a biting critique of “linguistic snobbery”. Here is a critique of “grammar vigilantes”. This article suggests that we should pay less attention to a writer’s grammar and more attention to their message. Finally\, an article argues that language purity is a tool to further white supremacy and classism \nJoin us at the next Café Inquiry (online) to remotely discuss this topic!

SUMMARY:Community Interfaith Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Join the Michigan Humanists at the Community Interfaith Memorial \nFranklin Crownover will be speaking as a representative of the Michigan Humanists. \nDESCRIPTION\nFor the past nine years\, local hospice care providers have combined efforts to create a service for centering and healing. We Remember: A Community Interfaith Memorial has been and continues to be a space where the words\, rhythms\, and practices of the interfaith community are offered for people to support and uphold each other in our adversity and loss. Using the language of many traditions – prayers\, songs\, reflections\, music\, and readings from sacred texts – this service gives language to grief\, mourning\, and celebration of life. Certainly\, as the Interfaith Memorials of years past have shown\, resilience is found within every religious\, secular\, and spiritual identity. \nThis year’s event will take place at the Catholic Information Center  on Tuesday\, September 12 from 6:30pm-8:00pm . The annual event will offer a 30-minute memorial-style service\, featuring persons from diverse religious / secular / spiritual traditions\, followed by interactive family-friendly activities to process loss and remember our loved ones. The service will feature music\, reflection\, meditation\, and poetry inclusive to all traditions. \nWhether grieving recent losses\, honoring those who have long since passed\, or simply curious as to how various traditions commemorate the passing of life\, all are welcome to share in this family-friendly space. \nThis event has been tagged as community\, grief\, interfaith\, memorial\, and remembrance. \nCONTACT\nKaufman Interfaith Institute\ninterfaith@gvsu.edu \nTo learn more about the event and the Kaufman Interfaith Institute\, visit this link \n————————————————————————————————————————– \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids - Believe It...Or Not! (In Person!!)
DESCRIPTION:The world is full of misinformation\, disinformation\, bad science\, and also some actual useful information! How do we decide what to believe? At the next Café Inquiry we will discuss techniques for evaluating the information bombarding us. Topics will include fact checking\, evaluating research\, science reporting\, and the use and misuse of statistics. See this Wikipedia page for a list of cognitive biases that can mislead us in evaluating information. Duke Reporters’ Lab has a report about fact checking and the UC Berkeley library has a list of fact checking sites. The World Editors Forum has information about how to report science news accurately. This article from the American Council on Science and Health discusses the difference between “Evidence-Based Medicine” and “Science-Based Medicine”. Finally\, here is a link to an introductory textbook on statistics for those of you who want to bone up a bit or take a deep dive before we meet.   We’ll see you in person on September 10 at the Institute for Global Education office on Wealthy Street (or will we?). \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Electric Vehicle Downsides
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nMost people see electric vehicle adoption as a vital tool in reaching net zero carbon emissions in order to slow global warming. However\, not everyone agrees. At the next Café Inquiry Online we’ll take a look at some of the criticisms directed at electric vehicles and explore their validity (or lack thereof). The Daily Mail provides this slanted but mostly factually accurate article about some of the negative aspects of EVs. This Washington Post article makes the argument that “range anxiety” is an overblown issue. Join us ONLINE for what we hope will be an informative discussion!

SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids - In Person! - Are Aspartame and Artificial Sweeteners Harmful?
DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organization recently added the artificial sweetener aspartame to its list of possible human carcinogens. But what is the actual significance of this? Join us LIVE and IN PERSON (woo hoo! Finally!) at Café Inquiry Grand Rapids as we take a look at the reasoning behind the WHO’s move\, the difference between “hazard” and “risk”\, and what the research actually says about the health effects of aspartame and other artificial sweeteners. This article from “Science-Based Medicine” clarifies the WHO’s decision to reclassify aspartame. The National Cancer Institute has a fact sheet about the health risks of artificial sweeteners. The contrast between this article from Harvard University and this one from Johns Hopkins illustrates the lack of consensus regarding artificial sweeteners and health. We are looking forward to a lively and informative IN PERSON discussion. Hope to see you there! \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion.
