SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Rooftop Solar and Net Metering
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nRooftop solar panels can play an important role in reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. At the next Café Inquiry we will look at some of the ins and outs of rooftop solar. We’ll also explore various ways of dealing with the excess energy produced during certain times of the day. Suggested background readings include this article from CNET that gives a good overview of solar panels as well as ranking them in terms of efficiency; this Forbes article that looks at the advantages and disadvantages of leasing vs buying solar panels; and this blog post about whether net metering or a home battery might be best for saving money. Join us ONLINE for our first meeting of 2024!  NOTE – Our previous live meeting venue has changed owners and is unavailable so we’ll be meeting online for the month of January. We have a line on a new venue and hope to resume live meetings on February 11. \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - The True Nativity Story? There Isn't One.
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nThis is the time of year that Nativity scenes and pageants abound. But is there any actual history behind these stories? Join us ONLINE on the eve of the Solstice (as marked on the old Roman calendar) as we take a look at how the mutually contradictory Christian Bible versions of the birth of Jesus likely came to be\, and why probably neither of them is true. We’ll also take a look at some of the other solstice-related holidays that have been celebrated over the years. It’s just a 90-minute break from all those family holiday activities! The only suggested background readings are the first 2 chapters of Matthew and the first 39 verses of Luke Chapter 2 that contain the accounts of Jesus’ birth. Here are links to Matthew and to Luke in the event you don’t have access to a Bible. Hope to see you online on the 24th! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - The Shark - Friend or Foe?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \n“New Jersey Coast Infested with Man Eating Monsters” says a headline from 1916 following 4 fatal shark attacks in 12 days along the New Jersey shore. Sharks have been around\, largely unchanged\, for at least 100 million years. They have been feared and hated in western cultures since ancient times\, though there are cultures where they are admired and worshipped. Fear of sharks was fueled by the 1975 movie Jaws\, and few people can listen to the famous theme without  a shudder. Winston Churchill once said\, “You may rest assured that the British Government is entirely opposed to sharks.” Shark attacks are uncommon\, but they do occur and they are terrifying. On the other hand many sharks are becoming endangered for a number of reasons including overfishing\, especially for their fins. Are sharks dark menacing man-eaters whose only value is providing us with shark fin soup and movie entertainment?  Or are they an essential part of the oceanic ecosystem? We will explore this sometimes controversial topic at the next Café Inquiry online. For background\, Save Our Seas Foundation provides this look at why sharks are a threatened species. The Shark Research Unit lists the ten most endangered shark species and seven research methods used to study sharks.  This Time magazine article examines whether or not the number of shark attacks is increasing. This CNN article takes a close look at shark fin soup. And…the original trailer for Jaws. Join us ONLINE for an in depth look at a fascinating creature! \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month in person on the second Sunday and online on the fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids - Music Makes Me Quixotic. IN PERSON!!
DESCRIPTION:Steve Andersen leads the LIVE IN PERSON discussion as we delve into the anthropological time capsule of music. Why are we prone to make music? Why do many of us experience ethereal/transcendent feelings when our auditory system is activated/flooded with music?  The title indicates this topic is less about intellect/fact-finding\, and more about joy. Please list your five favorite songs ahead of time. I know\, I know\, that’s difficult. Due to time constraints\, you may take one and explain why it may be so emotional/physical. Here are a few snippets of information to chew on:  Michael Spitzer looks at 40000 years of music in this 8-minute video. This brief article from the MIT Press Reader looks at the evolutionary origins of human musicality as it asks the question\, “Are Humans the Only Musical Species?” Finally\, this 11-minute video clip covers one person’s list of “The Top 10 Songs To Get Everyone On the Dance Floor”. We’ve been looking forward to this ever since Steve proposed the topic\, so let’s have fun with it! No promises\, but we may even have a special guest! Hope to see you there! \nPost-Event Followup: Here is a link to a Spotify playlist created from the attendees’ favorite songs lists. Enjoy and/or add to it! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Are U.S. Budget Deficits a Problem?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nEvery time a budget cycle comes around there is much hand-wringing\, wailing and gnashing of teeth over the U.S. government’s profligate ways and the growing national debt we will be dumping on our descendants\, dooming them to lives of darkness and misery. (Never mind that many of these same people seem perfectly content to inflict the very real ravages of climate change on those same descendants – but I digress). While many economists see continued budget deficits and our increasing national debt as an existential threat\, many others see it as no big deal. Join us ONLINE for the next Café Inquiry as we take a deeper look at this issue\, and at why government debt is different from household debt.  This Op-Ed from the Brookings Institute discusses why our current budget deficit is not really a problem. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget goes into great detail about why deficits are bad. To contrast\, Modern Monetary Theory\, described in this Investopedia article \,holds that the availability of real resources should be the only limit on government’s spending ability. Hope to see your virtual selves there!
