SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Political Violence on the Rise?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nPolitically motivated crimes in Germany have surged. A French MP was violently attacked at\nhis home. Slovakia’s Prime Minister was shot in an assassination attack. In the U.S. judges\,\npoliticians\, and ordinary citizens are besieged by violent threats and attacks. It seems that the\nworld is becoming more violent. At the next Café Inquiry we will explore these trends. Here is some suggested background reading: \n“Why Are Attacks and Incitement on the Rise in Germany?” from Der Spiegel; “Trump blasts his trial judges. Then his fans call for violence.” from Reuters; “Slovakia’s populist prime minister shot in assassination attempt\, shocking Europe before elections” from the Associated Press; “Violence Against Elected Officials Increases in France” from Euractiv; “Violence against local and regional elected representatives: a threat to our democracies” from The Council of Europe; and “The Rise of Political Violence in the United States” from Journal of Democracy. Join us ONLINE to help discuss this important and disturbing topic! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month IN PERSON on the second Sunday and ONLINE on the fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Myths About Overpopulation
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nFor this month’s Café Inquiry Online we’re taking another look at overpopulation as we discuss a recent Free Inquiry article\, “Myths about Overpopulation”\, by systems biologist Peter Uetz. Access the article here. Here is a PDF of a chart that failed to load in the article under the Myth 2 section. The impact excess population has on the planet is controversial. While some think it’s a huge problem requiring active solutions\, others believe it will solve itself as the population stabilizes\, and that falling birthrates create more problems than they solve. For further background\, here is a PDF of the Milton Saier article referenced in the new article. And here is an article from Vox that takes a different\, dissenting point of view. Join us ONLINE and share your thoughts as we try to find some clarity on this important and contentious issue. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month IN PERSON on the second and ONLINE on the fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Long Lake Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP to Cindy at volunteers@michiganhumanists.org if you are able to help at our annual Long Lake Workday on Saturday\, April 27. Michigan Humanists members will be at the Long Lake Outdoor Center from 9:30am-5pm\, or until projects are completed. When you RSVP to Cindy let her know when you might arrive\, and how long you think you may be able to stay. This helps us plan the projects we can get finished\, and utilizes everyone’s time wisely. \nWe will spruce up the campground for summer use\, including by us for our Secular Summer Retreat in July! Rick\, the manager of the LLOC has suggested several projects for us this year\, including dealing with a bumper crop of pinecones\, minor brush removal and landscaping resulting from trees being taken down\, moving leaves into the woods\, and there may be some staining of buildings. \nOne professional ask is\, do we have anyone with the necessary skills to replace the Formica on the buffet counter in the kitchen? Rick would want a professional looking job\, so if we do not have anyone that is confident they can do the job well and within the allotted time\, he would rather not have us do it. Please include expertise specific to this when you RSVP\, if you have it and are interested in this project. \nSometimes winter throws a curve\, and priorities change\, but the need for our help does not! We hope you can join us!

SUMMARY:The Minds of Animals with MSU Professor Mark Reimers (Grand Rapids)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore The Mind of Animals with Professor Mark Reimers. \nCan animals think or feel? Can they remember specific events? Can they imagine or anticipate what they might encounter in the future? During the twentieth century\, many scientists subscribed to the view that animals were like wind-up toys. However in recent decades\, detailed behavioral observations and recordings from animal brains have shown us some of the surprising capacities of animal minds. We are just beginning to understand some of the diverse intelligences among us. This talk will give a whirlwind tour of recent discoveries about the minds of animals: from dogs to dolphins and from our cousins the apes to the alien intelligence of octopods. \nThis lecture is generously sponsored by the GRCC Biology Department. \nEvent Location\nCalkins Science Center\, Grand Rapids Community College\n226 Bostwick Ave. NE Grand Rapids\, MI 49503 \nJoin us at Graydon’s Crossing after the event!\n1223 Plainfield Ave NE\, Grand Rapids\, MI 49505 \nParking Information\nMeter parking is free after 6:00pm. \nPublic Parking in Campus Ramps: first 30 minutes free | $2.00 per half hour | Evening/Weekend max $6.00. \nGeneral Event Parking on Campus: $3.50 for events less than 3 hours | $6.00 for events lasting more than 3 hours. \n_______ \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids - In Person! - The Immigration Dilemma
DESCRIPTION:Immigration is all over the news these days as the number of migrants encountered at the southern border is increasing\, and as politicians seek to use the issue for their benefit in an election year.  Unfortunately\, our divided political climate has stymied efforts to reach a solution. Rabble-rousing politicos hurl hyperbolic claims of rampant crime\, lawlessness\, and loss of jobs. In the current political and media climate it is all but impossible to get a nuanced view of the issue. That’s where we come in (we hope)! At this week’s Café Inquiry we’ll examine the recent history of immigration in the U.S. We’ll also look at how we got to this point and how we might alleviate what many are referring to as a crisis. Along the way we’ll examine some of the questionable claims associated with the current situation. Pew research center provides this 2015 look at changes in immigration law over the years. PBS News Hour ran this segment about the current strain on the system. Finally\, the Cato Institute provides this very detailed and somewhat lengthy history of immigration in the U.S. through 2020.  Join us IN PERSON to share your views! \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Artificial Intelligence and "The Shortcut"
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nJoin us ONLINE at the next Café Inquiry as Phil Gleason leads a discussion centered around Nello Cristianini’s book\, The Shortcut – Why Intelligent Machines Do Not Think Like Us. Here is Phil’s summary of the topic\, with a couple of background links: \nIn The Shortcut\, Cristianini defines intelligence very broadly as “the ability to behave effectively in a variety of situations\, including new ones.” No single quality makes a system intelligent. Plants adjust to a wide variety of novel circumstances\, growing in cracks\, growing tall rather than spreading out\, etc. Intelligence is not necessarily comprehensible from a human point of view. Cristianini sees intelligence as a compensating reaction to novel changes in the environment\, no matter how slow\, or limited in scope. “Whether they are based on statistical patterns\, or on neural pathways\, or on chemical reactions\, the decisions made by intelligent agents do not need to involve sentience nor language\, nor a higher appreciation of art and science.” (P. 10) The shortcut in the title refers to machine learning\, and to the fact that machine learning systems do not generate explanations\, or “rules of thumb”. The machine learning system\, once it has learned a task\, is a black box that provides answers\, but cannot reveal to us any generalizations or guidelines about the task. So\, we’re entering a world in which what are essentially alien intelligences are used to provide important information. This view of general intelligence\, intelligence far different from a human account of reason\, is shared by biologist Michael Levin. Levin works on morphogenesis\, and has produced some startling results in how body shape is controlled during development. Levin’s conclusions track those of Cristianini and together they point to a very different view of artificial intelligence than we see in the press. Here is a link to a brief Wikipedia biography of Michael Levin\, and here is a 20-minute TED talk he gave about electrical blueprints for orchestrating life. This YouTube video features Levin discussing cognition\, diverse intelligence and collective intelligence. This special bonus link is to a podcast interview of Michael Levin by physicist Sean M. Carroll – complete with transcript! \nThis should be a somewhat different take on a subject that has been in the news a lot! Hope to see you ONLINE for the discussion! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry - Media Reporting on Health and Science- In Person!!
DESCRIPTION:This event is held in person at 1005 Giddings Ave S.E.\, Grand Rapids. DON’T FORGET – Set your clocks ahead 1 hour the night before the meeting! We’re back on Daylight Saving Time!  \nMany of us learn about advances in science and health care from general media sources. That information is often accurate and helpful. But too often\, media reporting of scientific topics (even stories from “reliable” sources) can be inaccurate or misleading. Join us at the next Café Inquiry as we  discuss why science reporting is so fraught with problems and explore tools and techniques we can use to evaluate the veracity and relevance of what we read. This brief article from UC Berkeley suggests some ways to evaluate articles about scientific topics. This tutorial teaches you how to evaluate the health information you find on the Internet. This chapter from the guidebook for the Wondrium course\, The Skeptic’s Guide to Health\, Medicine and the Media\, provides a deeper look into the topic. Or if you have a Wondrium account\, the whole course is excellent! See you Sunday at 11 AM EDT! Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. Please speak to the event host or contact info@michiganhumanists.org if you feel these expectations are being violated.
