DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nThe use of carbon credits and carbon offsets has become a popular approach for addressing the growth of carbon emissions and climate change. There has been a dramatic worldwide increase in carbon offset markets and in “carbon trading”. The global carbon offsets market was valued at more than 900 million dollars in 2022 and has continued to grow. Are these practices effective? Or is their use just a form of “greenwashing”? Join us ONLINE at the next Café Inquiry to examine these issues. And there’s good news! Since we’ll be meeting on Zoom\, there’s no need to purchase an offset for your transportation related emissions! SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids - IN PERSON - Why is Childhood Vaccine Reluctance Rising?
DESCRIPTION:A recent Gallup poll reveals a very disturbing trend. Only 69% of Americans believe childhood vaccination is either extremely or very important. This is a marked contrast from 2001\, when the percentage was 94%. Interestingly\, this trend seems to be wholly driven by Americans aligned with a particular political party. Join us IN PERSON at the next Café Inquiry as we discuss this poll in some depth. We’ll also take a look at the vast public health benefits of childhood vaccines and try to figure out why vaccination has become so politicized. In addition\, we’ll look at the anti-vaccine movement and take a stab at debunking some of the myths they promote. For background\, this Vox article gives a good overview of the benefits of childhood vaccines. This piece from VeryWell Health looks at the history of the anti-vaccine movement and reveals how their tactics have changed very little since the 18th century. Others argue that moral judgments are not objective truths but instead depend on human beliefs. Join us ONLINE as Café Inquiry looks at the various aspects of morality\, its nature\, how it came to be\, and how we apply it. \nFor background\, this article explores how human morality came to be. This video looks at the contrast between moral realism and moral anti-realism and describes 4 types of anti-realism. DESCRIPTION:It’s time for the annual Michigan Humanists Secular Summer Retreat\, and that means it’s also time for our special\, live Saturday edition of Café Inquiry! We’ll be meeting on the grounds of the Long Lake Outdoor Center\, probably from 11-12:30\, and our topic will be Do Ultraprocessed Foods Increase Mortality?. There have been a number of studies lately linking the consumption of ultraprocessed foods and increased all-cause mortality. This leads to a few questions – what defines an ultraprocessed food\, and exactly what do these studies show? Is this a clear\, causal link\, or are there confounding factors involved? Join us as we take a deeper look at these and other questions. This PDF of a New York Times article gives a somewhat balanced take on the issue\, as does this summary from CNN – although the CNN article somewhat mischaracterizes the results of the BMJ study cited. NOTE – You are welcome to attend Café Inquiry only without registering for the retreat. DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nOver the weekend of May 10\, we experienced a level G5 geomagnetic storm triggered by a coronal mass ejection from the sun. This event produced auroras visible as far south as Puerto Rico and parts of Central America. It also brought to mind the much larger G5 storm of 1859 known as the Carrington Event. The relative lack of technology at the time limited the impact of this event. But a similar-sized event today\, or an even larger one\, could create worldwide devastation. At the next Café Inquiry we’ll discuss the likelihood of such an occurrence\, its likely impact on society\, and what we’re doing to minimize the damage. DESCRIPTION:Help spread the word about Michigan Humanists by volunteering for our information table at booth #57 at the 2024 Grand Rapids Pride Festival at the Calder Plaza! \nVolunteers will greet passersby\, tell people about Michigan Humanists\, hand out free goodies\, and encourage people to sign-up for our email list to find out about upcoming events. \nTo make the day manageable volunteers will be assigned to a 2-3 hour time spot — with 2-3 volunteers working at a time. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids - IN PERSON - Did Agriculture Ruin Human Society?
DESCRIPTION:Our regular hosts will be away this week\, but don’t despair! Café Inquiry carries on undaunted\, with Diane Baum leading the discussion on this week’s topic. Here is Diane’s description: \nFrank and Jessica will not be in town this week and asked me to elaborate on my comments about how agriculture ruined human society. I wondered about this first hand as I witnessed the success of low-carb diets (keto\, paleo\, carnivore) and also the good health and co-operative society of the traditional Inupiat (Eskimos) with whom I used to live. Years ago\, I researched the topic for a talk I was going to give to our local chapter of the Weston Price Foundation. In the 1930’s\, Dr. Price investigated the health of aboriginal people and found their health better than the health of us moderns.  In 1987\, Jared Diamond published an influential article calling agriculture our greatest mistake. Let’s talk about this! \nFor background material: \nThis is the article that started it all in 1987 from Jared Diamond\, prize-winning author of Germs\, Guns and Steel.  Here is a PDF of the Diamond article in case you’ve already used up your free Discovery articles. Here is a fun\, short video on the topic\, and an award-winning essay from 2006 which is a shortened version of the subject. Here is a video by a kid whose perspective was changed by reading Diamond’s article. This is a review of Dr.Weston Price’s book written in 1945-  Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. Dr.Price was a dentist who visited aboriginal communities trying to find why people’s teeth degenerated.  If you’re really interested in the subject\, here is a link to a PDF of Dr. Price’s entire book! The pictures are particularly interesting. \nLooking at the history of Rome shows some problems that come along with agriculture. Here are a few short videos: \nAgriculture in Ancient Rome led to the exhaustion of the land\, war and empire. Large landholders “Latifundia”  displaced small farmers\, driving them into the city. Rome then expanded further\, importing grain and giving it away “cura annonae”- the grain dole- in order to pacify the poor (along with public entertainments – Bread and Circuses). There were a lot of deaths and corruption that came along with this. \nFor balance\, this article from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) takes a more nuanced look at the issue\, pointing out that despite the downsides of agriculture it has enabled (for better or worse) a greatly increased population and technological growth.
