See below for further information. \nLiving Without Religion is a support group for those who are recovering or have recovered from religion. These people know your struggles\, and can offer support. We will share experiences\, resources\, and solidarity to help deal with all the problems related to leaving religion and moving onward in your life. \nIf you have left your religion\, are thinking of leaving\, or would like to support others in similar situations — this is the space for you. You are not alone in your search for a secular lifestyle. Questions and stories will be shared\, friends will be made\, and discussions will be had. \nLiving Without Religion is always free and open to anyone who meets the above criteria. \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. (There may be scaffolding in place due to construction\, but you can walk under it). Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor\, and follow the Michigan Humanist signs. Or ask directions from someone. The choir room is located on the left at the south end of a main hallway. \nParking information – Street parking\, if you can find it\, is free on Sunday. The nearby GRCC Parking structure is free until 3 PM on Sunday\, although this is not advertised. You will need to take a ticket to enter the structure but the exit gate will be open if you leave before 3 PM. Parking is also available free for up to 2 hours in the Public Library lot for patrons. You will need to have your ticket validated in the library. Join us for our first Café Inquiry of 2025! Phil Gleason will be leading a discussion of public choice theory\, which applies economics to the study of political science and government decision-making and how self-interest influences decisions. In the course of the discussion we’ll examine voting systems and the incentives that exist in political institutions. For background to the discussion\, we provide the following links: This introductory\, medium-length essay from the Library of Economics and Liberty covering the basic position of public choice theory; this short\, non-technical and realistic history of public choice; this link to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s program to study voting methods and voting systems – an important part of public choice theory; this explanation of voting systems from the advocacy group Fair Vote\, and links to information about the different types of voting systems (you can pick and choose according to your interest); this short video introduction to public choice from the Fraser Institute; and last but not least\, this longer (30-ish minute) video from the Center for the Study of Public Choice showing how incentives can be used to explain the behavior of politicians and voters. We’re excited about this meaty topic AND about our new\, more spacious and fully accessible venue! DESCRIPTION:Lately we’ve seen a number of headlines about companies changing or eliminating their diversity\, equity and inclusion programs. This week at Café Inquiry we’ll look at how and why these programs came into being\, and why they’ve lately come under attack. We’ll also look at what the programs are supposed to accomplish and what kind of success they’ve had. Yet perhaps we should also be marveling at our own ideologic tenacity. Not surprisingly\, this clinging to ideas has been studied. At the next Café Inquiry ONLINE we will discuss why we humans find it so hard to give up beliefs. We’ll talk about what scientists have discovered\, and we will also discuss our own adventures in belief abandonment. Before we meet you can look at the links below\,  two short videos and three readings. If you’d like\, please come prepared to share some of your own experiences giving up strongly held beliefs or opinions. This 2+ minute video provides a fun intro to the topic. In this 13 minute TedMed video\, Sara Gorman\, a public health expert\, talks about the psychology and neurophysiology of changing our minds in the context of medical misinformation. Keith M. Bellizzi\, Professor of Human Development and Family Sciences discusses cognitive biases and neurobiological factors that promote maintaining our beliefs in this short article. This New Yorker article from 2017 (but still relevant) discusses some of the research that has been done looking at how irrational we humans can be when evaluating new information. Finally\, here is a brief meditation on how we can be more open to changing our own minds. DESCRIPTION:Assisted suicide is legal throughout Canada. However\, there is controversy about who should be eligible. In 2021\, the eligibility was extended to people who do not have terminal medical conditions. There has been concern among the disabled community that this extension puts their members at risk due to lack of medical\, financial and social support for Canadians with disabilities. There is concern that people will be coerced into assisted suicide because of this lack of support and bias against the disabled among healthcare providers. At the next Café Inquiry we will examine the pros and cons of this revision in the context of disability rights. If you would like to explore the topic before we meet\, here are some suggested links: a webpage supported by the group Dying with Dignity\, which was in support of the original law and the revision; a letter in opposition to the bill that extended the criteria; a statement by Gabrielle Peters\, a co-founder of the Disability Filibuster\, a movement protesting the revision; and the (very lengthy) report from the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying. Additional material may be posted during the week of the event. There has been a dramatic worldwide increase in carbon offset markets and in “carbon trading”. The global carbon offsets market was valued at more than 900 million dollars in 2022 and has continued to grow. Are these practices effective? Or is their use just a form of “greenwashing”?
