SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids - IN PERSON - Assisted Suicide and Disability Rights
DESCRIPTION:Assisted suicide is legal throughout Canada. However\, there is controversy about who should be eligible. In 2021\, the eligibility was extended to people who do not have terminal medical conditions. There has been concern among the disabled community that this extension puts their members at risk due to lack of medical\, financial and social support for Canadians with disabilities. There is concern that people will be coerced into assisted suicide because of this lack of support and bias against the disabled among healthcare providers. At the next Café Inquiry we will examine the pros and cons of this revision in the context of disability rights. If you would like to explore the topic before we meet\, here are some suggested links: a webpage supported by the group Dying with Dignity\, which was in support of the original law and the revision; a letter in opposition to the bill that extended the criteria; a statement by Gabrielle Peters\, a co-founder of the Disability Filibuster\, a movement protesting the revision; and the (very lengthy) report from the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying. Additional material may be posted during the week of the event. There has been a dramatic worldwide increase in carbon offset markets and in “carbon trading”. The global carbon offsets market was valued at more than 900 million dollars in 2022 and has continued to grow. Are these practices effective? Or is their use just a form of “greenwashing”? DESCRIPTION:A recent Gallup poll reveals a very disturbing trend. Only 69% of Americans believe childhood vaccination is either extremely or very important. This is a marked contrast from 2001\, when the percentage was 94%. Interestingly\, this trend seems to be wholly driven by Americans aligned with a particular political party. Join us IN PERSON at the next Café Inquiry as we discuss this poll in some depth. We’ll also take a look at the vast public health benefits of childhood vaccines and try to figure out why vaccination has become so politicized. In addition\, we’ll look at the anti-vaccine movement and take a stab at debunking some of the myths they promote. This piece from VeryWell Health looks at the history of the anti-vaccine movement and reveals how their tactics have changed very little since the 18th century. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Online) - Where Does Morality Come From?
DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nSome philosophers argue for the existence of an objective morality that is universal and exists independently of culture\, upbringing or religion. Others argue that moral judgments are not objective truths but instead depend on human beliefs. Join us ONLINE as Café Inquiry looks at the various aspects of morality\, its nature\, how it came to be\, and how we apply it. \nFor background\, this article explores how human morality came to be. This video looks at the contrast between moral realism and moral anti-realism and describes 4 types of anti-realism. (Note – a previous link to an article about realism vs. anti-realism has gone defunct.) Three of the Mindscape podcasts from physicist/philosopher Sean M. Carroll explore certain aspects of morality. You can listen to them and/or read the transcripts. Or you can just show up. This one features philosopher Russ Shafer-Landau\, a proponent of moral realism. Neuroscientist and professor of psychology Molly Crockett looks at the interaction of morality and psychology in this podcast. Finally\, Joshua Greene discusses moral judgment and decision-making in this episode. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids AT THE SUMMER RETREAT - Do Ultraprocessed Foods Increase Mortality?
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for the annual Michigan Humanists Secular Summer Retreat\, and that means it’s also time for our special\, live Saturday edition of Café Inquiry! We’ll be meeting on the grounds of the Long Lake Outdoor Center\, probably from 11-12:30\, and our topic will be Do Ultraprocessed Foods Increase Mortality?. There have been a number of studies lately linking the consumption of ultraprocessed foods and increased all-cause mortality. This leads to a few questions – what defines an ultraprocessed food\, and exactly what do these studies show? Is this a clear\, causal link\, or are there confounding factors involved? Join us as we take a deeper look at these and other questions. This PDF of a New York Times article gives a somewhat balanced take on the issue\, as does this summary from CNN – although the CNN article somewhat mischaracterizes the results of the BMJ study cited. NOTE – You are welcome to attend Café Inquiry only without registering for the retreat. However\, we would urge you to at least register for the Saturday portion of the retreat so you can join your fellow humanists for meals and all the other fun activities and fellowship.
