See below for further information. \nLiving Without Religion is a support group for those who are recovering or have recovered from religion. These people know your struggles\, and can offer support. We will share experiences\, resources\, and solidarity to help deal with all the problems related to leaving religion and moving onward in your life. \nIf you have left your religion\, are thinking of leaving\, or would like to support others in similar situations — this is the space for you. You are not alone in your search for a secular lifestyle. Questions and stories will be shared\, friends will be made\, and discussions will be had. \nLiving Without Religion is always free and open to anyone who meets the above criteria. \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. (Not the big double doors. The smaller doors to the west. There may be scaffolding in place due to construction\, but you can walk under it). Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor\, and follow the Michigan Humanist signs. Or ask directions from someone. The choir room is located on the left at the south end of a main hallway. \nParking information – Street parking\, if you can find it\, is free on Sunday. The nearby GRCC Parking structure is free until 3 PM on Sunday\, although this is not advertised. You will need to take a ticket to enter the structure but the exit gate will be open if you leave before 3 PM. Parking is also available free for up to 2 hours in the Public Library lot for patrons. You will need to have your ticket validated in the library. This is almost always a lively and informative discussion\, usually with far more things to discuss than time to discuss them. We’ll be looking closely at a few of the many advances made in 2024\, probably concentrating on two or three areas of science. This year we’ll add a new wrinkle and ask that you pick a few science stories you find compelling or important and that you share them with the group if you so desire. Let’s have fun with this! There were so many discoveries this year!  It’s hard to decide which ones to focus on. This video discusses a few advances – some important\, some just interesting. DESCRIPTION:This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nIt depends on how one defines “god” and how one defines “atheist”. Steve Andersen explores the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza. Einstein had a famous quote: “I believe in Spinoza’s God\, who reveals himself in the lawful harmony of all that exists\, but not in a God who concerns himself with the fate and the doings of mankind.” These short video snippets for your perusal discuss Spinoza’s life and excommunication from Judaism because of his beliefs\, as well as exploring the nature of Spinoza’s God. If you’d like another perspective\, this episode of the Within Reason podcast video features Rainn Wilson (best known as Dwight Schrute in the U.S. version of The Office) discussing his views of religion\, spirituality and consciousness among other topics. Phil Gleason will be leading a discussion of public choice theory\, which applies economics to the study of political science and government decision-making and how self-interest influences decisions. In the course of the discussion we’ll examine voting systems and the incentives that exist in political institutions. For background to the discussion\, we provide the following links: This introductory\, medium-length essay from the Library of Economics and Liberty covering the basic position of public choice theory; this short\, non-technical and realistic history of public choice; this link to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s program to study voting methods and voting systems – an important part of public choice theory; this explanation of voting systems from the advocacy group Fair Vote\, and links to information about the different types of voting systems (you can pick and choose according to your interest); this short video introduction to public choice from the Fraser Institute; and last but not least\, this longer (30-ish minute) video from the Center for the Study of Public Choice showing how incentives can be used to explain the behavior of politicians and voters. This week at Café Inquiry we’ll look at how and why these programs came into being\, and why they’ve lately come under attack. We’ll also look at what the programs are supposed to accomplish and what kind of success they’ve had. Yet perhaps we should also be marveling at our own ideologic tenacity. Not surprisingly\, this clinging to ideas has been studied. At the next Café Inquiry ONLINE we will discuss why we humans find it so hard to give up beliefs. We’ll talk about what scientists have discovered\, and we will also discuss our own adventures in belief abandonment. Before we meet you can look at the links below\,  two short videos and three readings. If you’d like\, please come prepared to share some of your own experiences giving up strongly held beliefs or opinions. This 2+ minute video provides a fun intro to the topic. In this 13 minute TedMed video\, Sara Gorman\, a public health expert\, talks about the psychology and neurophysiology of changing our minds in the context of medical misinformation. Keith M. Bellizzi\, Professor of Human Development and Family Sciences discusses cognitive biases and neurobiological factors that promote maintaining our beliefs in this short article. This New Yorker article from 2017 (but still relevant) discusses some of the research that has been done looking at how irrational we humans can be when evaluating new information. Finally\, here is a brief meditation on how we can be more open to changing our own minds.
