See below for further information. \nLiving Without Religion is a support group for those who are recovering or have recovered from religion. These people know your struggles\, and can offer support. We will share experiences\, resources\, and solidarity to help deal with all the problems related to leaving religion and moving onward in your life. \nIf you have left your religion\, are thinking of leaving\, or would like to support others in similar situations — this is the space for you. You are not alone in your search for a secular lifestyle. Questions and stories will be shared\, friends will be made\, and discussions will be had. \nLiving Without Religion is always free and open to anyone who meets the above criteria. \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. (There may be scaffolding in place due to construction\, but you can walk under it). Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor\, and follow the Michigan Humanist signs. Or ask directions from someone. The choir room is located on the left at the south end of a main hallway. \nParking information – Street parking\, if you can find it\, is free on Sunday. The nearby GRCC Parking structure is free until 3 PM on Sunday\, although this is not advertised. You will need to take a ticket to enter the structure but the exit gate will be open if you leave before 3 PM. Parking is also available free for up to 2 hours in the Public Library lot for patrons. You will need to have your ticket validated in the library. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) Government Programs vs. Charitable Giving

Government is inefficient. Government social programs are wasteful. Private charities do a better job helping people. But the data may not support these statements.  Join us IN PERSON at the next Café Inquiry as we look in depth at charity and charitable giving throughout history and explore the transition from private charity to government programs. This somewhat lengthy 2014 article from Democracy deconstructs the myth of a time when private charity fulfilled all public needs. Here is a 2012 article from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities that debunks the claim that most federal low-income spending goes to “overhead” or “bureaucrats”. Finally\, to balance things a bit\, an article from the Foundation for Economic Education that claims that private philanthropy is much more effective than government programs. There are problematic claims in the article that undermine its premise which we’ll discuss. See you there! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Yet millions of Americans develop serious gambling disorders. Fortunately\, awareness of the problem is growing.  March is “Problem Gambling Awareness Month”. In honor of this\, we will discuss Gambling Addiction at our next Café Inquiry. For background\, this article from USA Today discusses gambling and public health. The American Psychological Association examines concerns about the risks of developing gambling disorders\, particularly in young people. This year’s talk is titled “Twists and Turns in Teaching Evolution over the Years” by Glenn Branch\, Deputy Director\, National Center for Science Education. \n\nControversies over the teaching of evolution in the public schools have rocked the nation over the past century. Evolution’s foes have consistently used the same arguments\, but their ambitions have shifted\, from banning the teaching of evolution through balancing it with a supposed alternative to blunting it by misrepresenting evolution as scientifically controversial. In his talk\, Glenn Branch of the National Center for Science Education will discuss the causes\, history\, and consequences of these controversies\, with a special emphasis on events in Michigan. \nGlenn Branch is deputy director of the National Center for Science Education\, a nonprofit organization that defends the integrity of American science education against ideological interference. He is the author of numerous articles on evolution education and climate education\, and the co-editor\, with Eugenie C. Scott\, of Not in Our Classrooms: Why Intelligent Design is Wrong for Our Schools (2006). This year we’ll add a new wrinkle and ask that you pick a few science stories you find compelling or important and that you share them with the group if you so desire. Let’s have fun with this! Steve Andersen explores the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza. Einstein had a famous quote: “I believe in Spinoza’s God\, who reveals himself in the lawful harmony of all that exists\, but not in a God who concerns himself with the fate and the doings of mankind.” These short video snippets for your perusal discuss Spinoza’s life and excommunication from Judaism because of his beliefs\, as well as exploring the nature of Spinoza’s God.
