SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) - Peptides: Great Medicine or Snake Oil?
DESCRIPTION:Peptides have been in the news lately. In opposition to FDA staff recommendations\, an FDA advisory committee has recommended that six popular peptides be put on a list of biologic agents that can be supplied by compounding pharmacies. One other peptide that was being considered was not recommended. What are peptides? What are they used for and why are they so controversial? How are they regulated? Was the FDA committee decision a good one? At the next Café Inquiry we will examine these questions and more. This interview summary from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health provides a succinct discussion of the recent FDA action\, with a link to the audio if you prefer to listen. This short article about one popular peptide explains the concerns about encouraging its use. This article\, and also this one\,  from the “Science-Based Medicine” site provide a good summary of what peptides are and the controversy about their regulation. Finally\, we recommend you watch this 5 minute video for a brief history of the FDA. See you there! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor\, and follow the Michigan Humanist signs. Or ask directions from someone. The choir room is located on the left at the south end of the west hallway. \nParking information – Street parking\, if you can find it\, is free on Sunday. The nearby GRCC Parking structure is free until 3 PM on Sunday\, although this is not advertised. You will need to take a ticket to enter the structure but the exit gate will be open if you leave before 3 PM. Parking is also available free for up to 2 hours in the Public Library lot for patrons. You will need to have your ticket validated in the library. If walking for any distance is a problem for you\, please contact us and we’ll see what can be arranged. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month IN PERSON on the second Sunday and ONLINE on the fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - Marriage and Adoption – Repugnant Transactions?
DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nHow does society decide what can be bought and sold? Nobel Prize-winning economist Alvin Roth has written a book titled Moral Economics: From Prostitution to Organ Sales\, What Controversial Transactions Reveal About How Markets Work\, in which he introduces the concept of “repugnant transactions” – exchanges that consenting adults want to make\, but which third parties find objectionable on moral or religious grounds. At our next Café Inquiry Online we’ll examine certain aspects of marriage and adoption through the lens of Roth’s work\, including questions about gay marriage\, dowry and bride price\, taking children from their parents\, foster care\, and adoption across ethnic groups. For background\, here is a link to an episode of physicist and philosopher Sean Carroll’s Mindscape podcast featuring an interview with Roth about his book. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. Please speak to the event host or contact info@michiganhumanists.org if you feel these expectations are being violated.

SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) - Does Correlation Necessarily Have a Cause?
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all likely heard the phrase\, “correlation is not causation” or words to that effect. Join us IN PERSON at the next Café Inquiry as Phil Gleason leads a discussion about correlation and causation. Sometimes two (or more) things that correlate have a causal relationship – and sometimes they don’t. If we observe A and B together\, did A cause B\, or did B cause A? Or did something unobserved cause both A and B? Is it possible to have a correlation and not have a cause? Can we infer causation with a high degree of confidence without gold-standard controlled\, double-blind studies? Here is a podcast interview with Judea Pearl\, a leading expert on probabilistic and causal reasoning\, that explores some basic ideas behind determining causation as well as diving a little deeper into the subject. Or you can read the transcript that’s also available in the link. This 4+ minute YouTube video gives a diagrammatic breakdown of some of the concepts discussed in the podcast. Finally\, this short YouTube video highlights some of the concerns about the use of our data\, which is related to our topic in ways that should become clear in our discussion.  This should be a fascinating conversation. Hope to see you there! SUMMARY:Lecture: Democracy is My Religion with Fish Stark (Grand Rapids)
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJoin us Tuesday September 15\, 2026 for our guest speaker\, Fish Stark\, Executive Director of the American Humanist Association.  Afterward\, come along to Palace of India for dinner and conversation: 138 East Fulton St. SE Grand Rapids\, MI 49503. \nHumanism isn’t the opposite of faith – it’s the opposite of authoritarianism. Unitarian minister Curtis Reese\, a co-founder of the American Humanist Association\, referred to humanism as the “religion of democracy” for a reason – because of our radical belief that truth\, morality\, and power do not rightly reside in an external source\, as theistic systems may claim\, but in us. Fish Stark weaves together humanist history\, philosophy\, psychology\, and theology to lay out a blueprint for how humanists can lean into the fight against authoritarianism feed our fire of commitment – and present a compelling vision for what we do believe rather than a negative vision of what we don’t. A rousing affirmation that we are not merely subjects of history\, but its authors\, the very higher power we have been searching for. \n\n\n \nFish Stark is an organizer\, educator\, social entrepreneur\, and lifelong humanist. Fish has spent his career turning big ideas into bold action in service of belonging\, flourishing\, and social justice for all people. \nPrior to joining the AHA as Executive Director\, Fish was the Head of Program + Curriculum at Legends\, an educational technology startup\, where he led research and implementation teams to create products that helped children build self-confidence\, positive mental health\, and critical thinking skills. \nPreviously\, Fish served as the Director of Programs at Peace First\, a global nonprofit that provides training and funding to youth social justice activists\, where he led a global team of organizers who empowered thousands of youth grantees in 140+ countries to make lasting change in their communities\, and worked with organizations such as the Red Cross and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation to develop youth leadership programs. \nFish’s other professional experiences include managing progressive political campaigns\, leading a mentorship program in the West Virginia coalfields with the American Friends Service Committee\, building a nationally recognized peer-to-peer bullying prevention program\, and teaching students from pre-school to high school. \nA self-proclaimed developmental psychology nerd who is passionate about giving everyone the tools to live lives of meaning\, service\, and self-determination\, Fish holds a Master’s in Education with a concentration in child development and psychology from Harvard University\, and a Bachelor’s from Yale University with a certificate in Education Studies. While at Yale\, Fish served as a student board member of the Yale Humanist Community and received a Dean’s Prize for his work to build a stronger relationship between Yale and New Haven. \nFish lives in Annapolis\, Maryland\, where he is President of the Speaker Mike Busch District 30 Democratic Club\, is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis\, and serves on several nonprofit boards. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - MRNA Tech: Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nMRNA technology – it’s not just for vaccines anymore! There’s been a lot of controversy around mRNA technology over the past few years\, largely driven by misinformation about its role in the rapid deployment of the COVID vaccines during the pandemic. At the next Café Inquiry Online we’ll take a close look at mRNA tech – its history\, how it works\, its place in vaccine development\, and new and exciting current and potential applications for advancing medical treatment. We’ll also take a look at some of the potential downsides of the technology as it becomes more widely available. This item from the Cleveland Clinic gives a good overview of mRNA vaccines. This short video clip from IFL Science looks at some of the misconceptions about mRNA vaccines. Finally\, this PDF of an article in the Washington Post looks at the actual and potential use of mRNA vaccines in treating cancer. We hope this will be an interesting and informative discussion of a potentially world-changing scientific tool. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) - John Donne (1572-1631): Poet\, Priest\, Renaissance Humanist
DESCRIPTION:At the next Café Inquiry\, we’ll be doing something special! Carmela McIntire\, who has a PhD in English Literature and had a long career as an associate professor of English at Florida International University\, will be discussing the life and poetry of John Donne (see above)\, focusing on 10-12 poems from his collection of secular poetry\, Songs and Sonnets.  Donne celebrates love\, including sex\, with a frankness and joy that appeals enormously to modern readers. Here is a link to a site where Donne’s works can be accessed\, and here is  a link to a document listing the works Carmela suggests we read ahead of the meeting. Here is a link to a PDF of the same document in case the Word format is problematic. Here at Café Inquiry we’re really excited for this opportunity to learn from an actual expert. Don’t miss it!
