SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - MRNA Tech: Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nMRNA technology – it’s not just for vaccines anymore! There’s been a lot of controversy around mRNA technology over the past few years\, largely driven by misinformation about its role in the rapid deployment of the COVID vaccines during the pandemic. At the next Café Inquiry Online we’ll take a close look at mRNA tech – its history\, how it works\, its place in vaccine development\, and new and exciting current and potential applications for advancing medical treatment. We’ll also take a look at some of the potential downsides of the technology as it becomes more widely available. This item from the Cleveland Clinic gives a good overview of mRNA vaccines. This short video clip from IFL Science looks at some of the misconceptions about mRNA vaccines. Finally\, this PDF of an article in the Washington Post looks at the actual and potential use of mRNA vaccines in treating cancer. We hope this will be an interesting and informative discussion of a potentially world-changing scientific tool. See you there! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month IN PERSON on the second Sunday and ONLINE on the fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. Please speak to the event host or contact info@michiganhumanists.org if you feel these expectations are being violated.

SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) - John Donne (1572-1631): Poet\, Priest\, Renaissance Humanist
DESCRIPTION:At the next Café Inquiry\, we’ll be doing something special! Carmela McIntire\, who has a PhD in English Literature and had a long career as an associate professor of English at Florida International University\, will be discussing the life and poetry of John Donne (see above)\, focusing on 10-12 poems from his collection of secular poetry\, Songs and Sonnets.  Donne celebrates love\, including sex\, with a frankness and joy that appeals enormously to modern readers. Here is a link to a site where Donne’s works can be accessed\, and here is  a link to a document listing the works Carmela suggests we read ahead of the meeting. Here is a link to a PDF of the same document in case the Word format is problematic. Here at Café Inquiry we’re really excited for this opportunity to learn from an actual expert. Don’t miss it! \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor\, and follow the Michigan Humanist signs. Or ask directions from someone. The choir room is located on the left at the south end of the west hallway. \nParking information – Street parking\, if you can find it\, is free on Sunday. The nearby GRCC Parking structure is free until 3 PM on Sunday\, although this is not advertised. You will need to take a ticket to enter the structure but the exit gate will be open if you leave before 3 PM. Parking is also available free for up to 2 hours in the Public Library lot for patrons. You will need to have your ticket validated in the library. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - Political Parties
DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nAmerican political parties have been very busy lately. Party allegiance plays a huge role in our politics\, yet the functioning of parties varies throughout the world. A “liberal” party could be right wing in one country and left wing in another. And the number of political parties a country has ranges widely\, from zero in several places to more than 2500 in India. At the next Café Inquiry Online (shortly before our upcoming election)\, we will talk about…political parties. For an overview of the history of and varieties of political parties\, you can look through this lengthy but informative Wikipedia article. This Wikipedia page has a list of countries and other entities that don’t have political parties. Watch this 15-minute video about Danish elections to get a sense of what politics is like in a multi-party system. For a very approachable discussion of the party system in Australia and its implications\, you can watch this episode of the Political Reality podcast on YouTube. The segments from approximately minutes 7.25 to 28.18\, and from 37.14 to 41.22 deal with political parties. For some reason the video is starting in the middle\, but you can just move it back to wherever you want to start.  See you there! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to propose future topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology.

SUMMARY:Skeptics in the Pub (Muskegon)
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Skeptics in the Pub (Muskegon) will meet at Carlisle’s Restaurant. By popular request we’ll have suggested topics for discussion each month\, to be posted here a few days before the event. \nSkeptics in the Pub\, “Critical Thinking with a Pint\,” is an opportunity for non-theists to converse in a casual\, fun atmosphere. \nLearn more about the international Skeptics in the Pub movement at skepticsinthepub.org. (We don’t invite speakers\, but rather follow our conversations wherever they take us. For a more structured discussion\, look for Café Inquiry events on our calendar.) \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nDon’t drink? That’s okay! Many famous skeptics were teetotalers\, and there is no problem with that. \nDrinking skeptically means drinking responsibly. Science teaches us what alcohol does to the human body. \nYou will find the group at a table with little Michigan Humanists table signs. \nSkeptics in the Pub (Muskegon) meets each month on the second Thursday. \n_____ \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion.
