SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - Marriage and Adoption – Repugnant Transactions?
DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nHow does society decide what can be bought and sold? Nobel Prize-winning economist Alvin Roth has written a book titled Moral Economics: From Prostitution to Organ Sales\, What Controversial Transactions Reveal About How Markets Work\, in which he introduces the concept of “repugnant transactions” – exchanges that consenting adults want to make\, but which third parties find objectionable on moral or religious grounds. At our next Café Inquiry Online we’ll examine certain aspects of marriage and adoption through the lens of Roth’s work\, including questions about gay marriage\, dowry and bride price\, taking children from their parents\, foster care\, and adoption across ethnic groups. For background\, here is a link to an episode of physicist and philosopher Sean Carroll’s Mindscape podcast featuring an interview with Roth about his book.  See you there! \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month IN PERSON on the second Sunday and ONLINE on the fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. Please speak to the event host or contact info@michiganhumanists.org if you feel these expectations are being violated.

SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) - Peptides: Great Medicine or Snake Oil?
DESCRIPTION:Peptides have been in the news lately. In opposition to FDA staff recommendations\, an FDA advisory committee has recommended that six popular peptides be put on a list of biologic agents that can be supplied by compounding pharmacies. One other peptide that was being considered was not recommended. What are peptides? What are they used for and why are they so controversial? How are they regulated? Was the FDA committee decision a good one? At the next Café Inquiry we will examine these questions and more. This interview summary from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health provides a succinct discussion of the recent FDA action\, with a link to the audio if you prefer to listen. This short article about one popular peptide explains the concerns about encouraging its use. This article\, and also this one\,  from the “Science-Based Medicine” site provide a good summary of what peptides are and the controversy about their regulation. Finally\, we recommend you watch this 5 minute video for a brief history of the FDA. \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - Recent Environmental Rollbacks (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nBack in April we looked at some of the many environmental policy rollbacks promulgated by the second Trump administration\, with a focus on actions by the EPA. At the next Café Inquiry Online we’ll look at regulatory rollbacks not specific to the EPA\, along with some of the regulations weakened or repealed since we last touched on this topic. We’ll also try to dig into the motivations behind these seemingly counterproductive actions on the part of the administration. This ProPublica article describes the EPA’s efforts to weaken chemical regulations. The New York Times reports on the increase in environmental mercury levels resulting from an increase in coal burning. This newsletter article from National Parks Traveler describes the Bureau of Land Management’s repeal of the public lands rule. Finally\, ProPublica weighs in again on the “process” followed for exempting polluters from air quality rules. This should be a lively discussion\, and there’s a lot to cover. Hope you can join us! SUMMARY:SPECIAL Café Inquiry AT THE RETREAT! - National and Cultural Identity
DESCRIPTION:***This month’s special Café Inquiry will meet at the SECULAR SUMMER RETREAT on SATURDAY\, JULY 11\, 2026*** \nYou can join us just for Café Inquiry (no entry fee for the meeting only) or you can join us for the day! Get your Saturday Day Pass for the Secular Summer Retreat here. \nSince we’re just starting our 251st year as a nation\, maybe it’s time to take an in-depth look at national identity and cultural identity. What does it mean to be an American? What is our national identity? Is there one that everyone can agree on\, or are there multiple such identities? How has it changed over the years\, if at all? How are national identity and cultural identity different? Are immigrants a threat to our national or cultural identities? Are national and cultural identities really that important? These are some of the questions we’ll be exploring at our special Saturday Café Inquiry at the Retreat\, which will be our only in person meeting in July. This opinion piece looks at how America has continually redrawn criteria for belonging. This page explores the emergence of a national identity. Finally\, here are some survey results from PRRI on the relative importance of certain factors in defining who is a true American. \n  \n  \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - Higher Education in Crisis?
DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nHow University Presidents Set the Tone for Institutional Culture and Why That Matters to Students \nIs there a crisis in higher education? Does higher education still have value? Why do some universities struggle while others seem to thrive? Join us at the next Café Inquiry Online as Dr. Figen Mekik\, Professor of Geology in the Physics Department of Grand Valley State University\, discusses these issues along with how the quality of senior institutional leadership is the key to a thriving university – affecting both tuition costs and the quality of education and support. Dr. Mekik will also touch on recent decisions at the University of Michigan (hiring a new President) and at GVSU (cutting some retirement benefits) and their potential impacts. This promises to be a very topical and lively discussion. See you there! \nDr. Figen Mekik became the public face of an open letter to the Board of Trustees of GVSU signed by (now) over 250 faculty\, students\, and staff concerned about the new direction of the Institution set by its senior leadership. The results of a recent survey of faculty and students at GVSU showed low confidence in leadership. Figen has authored several articles about the fallacies of crisis in higher education\, students being the most important people on campus\, and the qualities senior leadership must have to successfully steward their institution for the benefit of all its students. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) - "Mussolini’s Intellectuals" – A Book Report
DESCRIPTION:At the next Café Inquiry\, Phil Gleason presents a report on the book\, Mussolini’s Intellectuals: Fascist Social and Political Thought\, by A. James Gregor. Fascism has traditionally been characterized as irrational and anti-intellectual\, finding expression exclusively as a cluster of myths\, emotions\, instincts\, and hatreds. This intellectual history of Italian Fascism–the product of four decades of work by one of the leading experts on the subject in the English-speaking world–provides an alternative account. The author argues that Italian Fascism may have been a flawed system of belief\, but it was neither more nor less irrational than other revolutionary ideologies of the twentieth century. The book describes fascism as a scholarly movement\, but is certainly NOT a defense of fascism; and we’ll be highlighting the points where fascist thought went “over the line” in its account of the relation of the individual to society. You do not need to have read the book to join us and participate in the discussion. Here is a link to some relevant passages from the book. This thought-provoking topic should lead to a lot of interesting discussion. Join us! \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor\, and follow the Michigan Humanist signs. Or ask directions from someone. The choir room is located on the left at the south end of the west hallway. \nParking information – Street parking\, if you can find it\, is free on Sunday. The nearby GRCC Parking structure is free until 3 PM on Sunday\, although this is not advertised. You will need to take a ticket to enter the structure but the exit gate will be open if you leave before 3 PM. Parking is also available free for up to 2 hours in the Public Library lot for patrons.
