DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nJoin us ONLINE for a Special Guest Presentation by Glenn Branch! \n \nWhen Charles K. Johnson\, the president of the International Flat Earth Research Society\, died in 2001\, he seemed at the time to be the last apostle of his unusual creed. Twenty-four years on\, however\, the flat earth is alive and well\, especially\, but not exclusively\, on the internet. In his talk\, Glenn Branch of the National Center for Science Education will sketch the history of the flat-earth movement\, from its source in the ancient Near East through its coalescence in Victorian Britain to its modern rebirth on the Internet\, and discuss current scholarly research on the prevalence\, causes\, and consequences of modern flat-earthery. \nGlenn Branch is Deputy Director of the National Center for Science Education\, a nonprofit organization that defends the integrity of American science education against ideological interference. He is the author of numerous articles on evolution education and climate education\, and the co-editor\, with Eugenie C. Scott\, of Not in Our Classrooms: Why Intelligent Design is Wrong for Our Schools (2006). He received the Evolution Education Award for 2020 from the National Association of Biology Teachers. DESCRIPTION:Living Without Religion is a support group for those who are recovering or have recovered from religion. These people know your struggles\, and can offer support. We will share experiences\, resources\, and solidarity to help deal with all the problems related to leaving religion and moving onward in your life. \nIf you have left your religion\, are thinking of leaving\, or would like to support others in similar situations — this is the space for you. You are not alone in your search for a secular lifestyle. Questions and stories will be shared\, friends will be made\, and discussions will be had. \nLiving Without Religion is always free and open to anyone who meets the above criteria. \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. (There may be scaffolding in place due to construction\, but you can walk under it). Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor\, and follow the Michigan Humanist signs. Or ask directions from someone. The choir room is located on the left at the south end of a main hallway. \nParking information – Street parking\, if you can find it\, is free on Sunday. SUMMARY:Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - Stoicism for Humanists
DESCRIPTION: This event is held online. (Click the button to join the Zoom meeting.) \nStoicism\, an ancient philosophy\, has been enjoying a recent resurgence. In 2019\, Meditations\, written by\nthe famous Stoic Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius\, sold more than 100\,000 copies. It has been suggested\nthat Humanism has roots in Stoic philosophy. At the next online Café Inquiry\, we will take a break from\ncurrent events. Instead\, we’ll examine the philosophy of Stoicism and look at the ancient roots of\nmodern Humanist thought. Massimo Pigliucci\, a professor of philosophy at the City College of New York and longstanding humanist\, describes his reasons for adopting a philosophy of Secular Stoicism in this article from New Humanist. In this article\, Jules Evans\, a philosopher and author of the book Breakfast with Seneca\, discusses the reasons for the recent increased interest in Stoic philosophy. There is a link in the article to an interesting 15 minute video which goes into a little more depth. Finally\, Canadian philosopher Trudy Govier discusses her exploration into and thoughts about Stoic philosophy. DESCRIPTION:Living Without Religion is a support group for those who are recovering or have recovered from religion. These people know your struggles\, and can offer support. We will share experiences\, resources\, and solidarity to help deal with all the problems related to leaving religion and moving onward in your life. \nIf you have left your religion\, are thinking of leaving\, or would like to support others in similar situations — this is the space for you. You are not alone in your search for a secular lifestyle. Questions and stories will be shared\, friends will be made\, and discussions will be had. \nLiving Without Religion is always free and open to anyone who meets the above criteria. \nTo access the choir room enter the building via the Fountain Street entrance. (There may be scaffolding in place due to construction\, but you can walk under it). Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor\, and follow the Michigan Humanist signs. Or ask directions from someone. The choir room is located on the left at the south end of a main hallway. \nParking information – Street parking\, if you can find it\, is free on Sunday. The nearby GRCC Parking structure is free until 3 PM on Sunday\, although this is not advertised. You will need to take a ticket to enter the structure but the exit gate will be open if you leave before 3 PM. Parking is also available free for up to 2 hours in the Public Library lot for patrons. You will need to have your ticket validated in the library. DESCRIPTION:Research and development in artificial intelligence is advancing at a dizzying pace – but this is not\nnecessarily a good thing. At the next Café Inquiry Jason Swanepoel\, the group leader of the Grand\nRapids chapter of PAUSEAI\, will make the case for an international AI Treaty to temporarily pause AI\ntraining and development. Jason will talk about his background in the field\, and about why AI\ndevelopment is a threat and ways people can take action. For background\, here are links to the PauseAI website and to their info page.  This should be a fascinating discussion of a very current issue – a great\nway to kick off another year of Café Inquiry! Join us IN PERSON as Kate Lynnes leads a discussion of Christian Nationalism and Hillsdale’s outsized role in promoting that particular cause. There is a wealth of background material to sample as you will. Be warned that some of this material may be more palatable with an adult beverage. Here is the link to Hillsdale’s website. This is a link to Hillsdale’s “Freedom Library” – a collection of online videos from various lectures. Here are a number of free online courses offered by the institution. And of course\, like everyone these days\, Hillsdale has podcasts. Some of you might be interested in the one from November 21\, “Scott Jennings Explains the Common Sense of Donald Trump”. Other Christian Nationalism resources include this review of a book by a Hillsdale professor making the case that the pre-Civil War U.S. was a Protestant republic. Politico has a story about the Trump administration’s partnership with Hillsdale to produce videos for our 250th Independence Day. DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 26th year of our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration! \nThe Kaufman Interfaith Institute\, along with the interfaith community of Grand Rapids\, welcomes you to enjoy an evening of celebration for the religious and secular diversity of our community. \nThis year\, Michigan Humanists will be represented by Hypatia Dawn in the program! \nThe Interfaith Thanksgiving celebration is a service that features musical pieces\, reflections\, and dances from various religious and secular traditions in our community. During the event\, we will hear from members of our community\, representing an array of religious\, spiritual\, and secular worldview identities\, as they discuss the enduring need for gratitude for our shared home during this and all seasons. A free-will offering will be collected to benefit The Community Day Center (a new program which will be providing day shelter to people in the downtown Grand Rapids area. \nRSVP not required\, but appreciated.  You can RSVP here. \nLight refreshments will follow the gathering.

Over the years the U.S. has intervened in Latin America many times\, both overtly and covertly. At the next Café Inquiry Online we’ll take a look at some of this history and its consequences\, and we’ll explore the current situation as regards Venezuela. A professor at North Carolina State University provides this timeline of US-Latin American relations from 1795 through 2014. This gift article from the New York Times gives an overview of a few C.I.A operations in Latin America. The Conversation has this piece that focuses on the U.S. government’s changing attitudes towards Panama and the Panama Canal.
