SUMMARY:Café Inquiry Grand Rapids - Music Makes Me Quixotic. IN PERSON!!
DESCRIPTION:Steve Andersen leads the LIVE IN PERSON discussion as we delve into the anthropological time capsule of music. Why are we prone to make music? Why do many of us experience ethereal/transcendent feelings when our auditory system is activated/flooded with music?  The title indicates this topic is less about intellect/fact-finding\, and more about joy. Please list your five favorite songs ahead of time. I know\, I know\, that’s difficult. Due to time constraints\, you may take one and explain why it may be so emotional/physical. Here are a few snippets of information to chew on:  Michael Spitzer looks at 40000 years of music in this 8-minute video. This brief article from the MIT Press Reader looks at the evolutionary origins of human musicality as it asks the question\, “Are Humans the Only Musical Species?” Finally\, this 11-minute video clip covers one person’s list of “The Top 10 Songs To Get Everyone On the Dance Floor”. We’ve been looking forward to this ever since Steve proposed the topic\, so let’s have fun with it! No promises\, but we may even have a special guest! Hope to see you there! \nPost-Event Followup: Here is a link to a Spotify playlist created from the attendees’ favorite songs lists. Enjoy and/or add to it!  \nCafé Inquiry starts with a short introduction of the day’s topic\, followed by casual discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated\, but not expected. \nAttendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism\, agnosticism\, humanism\, secularism\, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities\, such as religion\, philosophy\, social issues\, politics\, evolution\, morality\, ethics\, and psychology. \nCafé Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets each month on the second and fourth Sunday. \n— \nMichigan Humanists values the participation of all guests — requests for reasonable accommodation may be made by contacting the event host at least three days prior to the event. \nMichigan Humanists expects all guests to engage in respectful discussion. Critiques on views and claims based on merit are allowed\, but not attacks on individuals who hold other perspectives. \nAny person engaging in disruptive behavior or harassment will be asked to leave\, and may be banned from future events pending the severity of the action. Please speak to the event host or contact info@michiganhumanists.org if you feel these expectations are being violated.
